Amazon.co.uk Review

When your child isn't sleeping, chances are that you aren't either. Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems--the tired parent's essential reading for more than 10 years--offers valuable advice and concrete help when lullabies aren't enough to lull your child into dreamland. Based on Ferber's research as the director of Boston's Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children's Hospital, the book is a practical, easy-to-understand guide to common sleeping problems for children aged one to six. Detailed case histories on night waking, difficulty sleeping and more serious disorders such as sleep apnea and sleepwalking help illustrate a wide variety of problems and their solutions. New parents will benefit from Ferber's proactive advice on developing good sleeping patterns and daily schedules to ensure that sleeping problems don't develop in the first place. You'll also find a bibliography of children's books on bedtime, sleep and dreaming, as well as a list of helpful organizations. Here's a book that is sure to put you and your whole family to sleep--in this case, that's a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars At the end of your tether?, 23 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide for Parents (Paperback)
'At the end of your tether?' is the title of the first chapter of this book. Last Thursday morning I most certainly was at the end of my tether. My 9 month old son had been up through the night and then awake from 3am - by 7am I was tearful and thought I had to do something about this! I logged on to Amazon, read the reviews for this book and bought it. It arrived on Friday and this is now Tuesday night - after reading the book we started the recommended treatment on Sunday night. The first night was awful having to listen to him cry but it worked and he slept through after waking up just once. Last night he slept 11 hours which is wonderful for my husband and I. Don't wait 8 weeks like we did - buy this book now!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gave us our lives back!, 16 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide for Parents (Paperback)
Our eight month old daughter was a nightmare to put down to sleep - she had to be rocked, sung to and stroked to sleep EVERY time she woke up. She wouldn't go to "bed" until after 11pm and was up at 7am, so I had no time without her in the evenings. In desparation, I contacted my health visitor and she recommended this book. After three days of following the advice in the book, she would fall asleep BY HERSELF in her cot without much fuss. After a week, she genuinely looked pleased to be put in the cot . I couldn't believe the difference. The book gave us so much confidence and REALLY sensible advice. There are lots of case studies, and its so reassuring to hear other families problems!! This book should be given out to all Mothers on the NHS - we wished we read it months ago. Our baby is much happier during the day, and has a much healthier appetite. I'm a lot less stressed and tired, and the household runs smoother.

One tip - do the controlled crying BEFORE you baby can stand/crawl in the cot if you can.

After reading this book I felt like I had been converted to a new religion and "seen the light". BUY IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all tired parents., 22 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide for Parents (Paperback)
I unfortunately didn't find this book until my son was 20 months old. By that time I had suffered more than my fair share of sleepless nights through not understanding why he didn't sleep well.

It explains through case studys, how many common child sleep problems are created and gives very simple methods for retraining your child into a normal sleep pattern. We found that 2 nights of the Ferber routine were enough to have my son falling asleep in his cot, on his own and sleeping through the night. I have since passed the book on to friends to help them with their 3 year old who keeps climbing into bed with them.

This book should be given free to all parents when their child is born. Don't lose sleep out of ignorance, read this book.
