Solomon Burke is an all time great. Time will show just how great but the real problem with this DVD is that Solomon is in every sense larger than life. His career, the events in his life, his current girth, his humour and most of all his music are super-sized. No-one can tell a story like Solomon but that's the problem.
No one film, especially one like this that isn't actually that long, can convey the sheer size of his achievements and the sheer quality of his voice and music. A film like this needs talking heads because that's the nature of the beast. However, talking heads mean less music and less Solomon talking and that inevitably detracts. If ever there was a story that just needed to be told by the protagonist then this is it.
Don't get me wrong, every fan of the King of Pop and Soul needs to own this and they inevitably will. However, if you're looking for the definitive film documentary then you'll still be waiting at the end. There simply isn't going to be a film big enough to accommodate this man.
Good try though.
