Biography

As influential as he proved to be during the final decades of his lifetime, it appears that Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-82) has only gained greater stature in the years since his death. Once considered too eccentric and complex to be appreciated by listeners and other musicians, Monk has become a standard of excellence, as both composer and soloist, for those who seek to extend the jazz ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Solo genious of modern jazz piano 7 Jun 2008
Format:Audio CD
This weird Monk's solo outing is absolutely marvelous; entertaining and witty in a way one would expect from a Clark Terry live album, and yet still jagged, surprising, twisted and twisting, messing with harmonies tempos and rhythms in a way only this master could...

The opening song, "Dinah", much more common for the Fats Waller repertoire opens the album for a reason - it gives the listener some guidelines what to expect and how to take it. One of the most intelligent listeners to jazz tradition, Monk here gives brilliant, ironical but not mocking tribute to music (and, particularly, piano styles) of the past, performing few of his great originals as well...

I enjoyed this album immensely. You can buy it with or without bonus tracks; it's still great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of Monk's loveliest recordings 17 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great solo performances here, most in Monk's trademark stride style. Stand out tracks are Monk's versions of 'Dinah' and 'I'm Confessin'. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Consumate artistry 19 Nov 2013

This album is quintissential Monk. To hear this solo piano by one of the great innovators in jazz is a great delight.
I had this album years ago and am now revisiting it - what I don't like are the added takes because the album was complete and perfect before and the experience of hearing the tracks once is rich enough - it's like eating a meal - you know when you're full !

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Monk Solo Abum 16 May 2013
By A. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I could not believe the faint praise on amazon for this wonderfully playful Monk album. This is, IMHO, the most accessible release by Thelonious. The album contains a large number of jazz standards and some new compositions, but just a few of Monk's own classic compositions. Having said that, Dinah and I'm Confessin' sound absolutely full of life. You may also notice that Monk strides the left hand on most of the songs, adding to the old-time feel. (Many of those jazz standards were 30+ years old at the time of this release in 1965.) This is one to pick up, especially if you are new to jazz or Thelonious Monk. This is the best of his three solo albums, and ranks at the top of his Columbia LPs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best there's ever been 10 Dec 2013

I'm going deaf and embedding great music in my mind with repetitions has become a quest. There's no one in jazz piano like Thelonius Monk. The very best there's ever been. SOLO he's well beyond incompaarable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Editorial review looks wrong - these are mostly 1964 recordings released in 1965 -- NOT 1946 recordings! 29 Jan 2014
By Rich - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Vinyl
Not sure where this misinformation originated but there's multiple descriptions all over that these are solo recordings from 1946. Given that Monk's first Blue Note sessions as a leader date from 1947 and the only 1946 recordings I'm aware of are from a broadcast of Monk with Dizzy's big band this would have been quite a find! (It would have been especially historic to find original master TAPES from 1946 as that pre-dates general use of "magnetic tape" recording!!!) And 3 stars is mostly for the wrong info -- these are wonderful performances but personally I prefer the 1959 Alone in SF Riverside for solo Monk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique jazz piano 26 Sep 2011

This is a great recording at a great price via Amazon. Monk's playing is never simple but the kind that brings new pleasures and insights with each repeat. A unique disc.

There is just nothing I can't love about this album. Sweet and soulful and alittle fun too. Listening to it right now.
