Not Very Good 12 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
I usually don't take book reviews too seriously. It is after all one persons view. However, in this case I must agree with bubblefish777. There is nothing new in this book that most divers don't know. Perhaps those new to diving may find parts of the book helpful. I have found more information via search engines about the pros/cons/views of solo diving. I dive with five other divers who all solo dive once they are down the shot. I am going to do solo diving with them when the 2004 season in the UK kicks off again. Until then I advise people to use their common sense and dive with a twin set. Myself, I use a 300bar 12ltr and a 300bar 3ltr pony....Safe diving, Mike.

Why Bother ? 14 Nov 2002
By A. Cresswell TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book was a complete waste of money for me. I am quite interested in diving solo and as such have progressed to PADI Rescue Diver and read Technical Diving magazines. However if you do this then there is nothing in this book that will be new to you. Basics of Nitrox, Pony Tanks, and corrent management of yourself and equipment will all be familiar to you. If you're not an RD then you should NOT be thinking about diving solo as you will not be experienced enough to problem solve during a crises and this book is certainly not going to give you that or the specialist knowledge you need. In all I was very dissapointed. I expected proceedural information, checklists, equipment recommendations (outside of the norm such as transponders on the 155.5 Mhz band for Air/Sea rescue). The book is thin and is further padded with stories on why people dive solo. Do yourself a favour. If you want to dive solo look elsewhere and do some research and update your skills.

I have been interested in solo diving for some time. I bought this book hoping that it would teach me something new or something I could use towards solo diving. The book contains information you would know as a novice diver who has reached the Advanced Open Water level. I don't know how I managed to finish reading the whole book. It has got to be the worse book ever written. I learnt nothing new and I didn't find anything in the book of interest. There is a chapter from instructors and solo divers stating why they solo dive, but no tips on solo diving. A lot of instructors mention that they are in effect solo diving when they have students with them because the students wouldn't know what to do in an emergency. That may be true, but if the instructor is out of air for whatever reason, he has a student with an octopus and someone who can raise an alarm. A pony cannot raise an alarm. I was also led to believe that an instructor requires a qualified rescue diver or above with them when they are teaching. This may be a tad irrelevant, but the book is still a waste of time and money.
