From Amazon.co.uk

In Solo, a low-budget movie about the titular robot soldier (Mario Van Peebles) created by the Pentagon to be the perfect, unfeeling fighting machine, there's a hint--albeit a very brief one--of James Whale's classic 1931 Frankenstein. When Solo is sent into Central American jungles to battle guerrillas, a flaw in his program emerges when it's discovered that he has compassion and a conscience. Fleeing his keepers, the robot becomes part of a jungle village after its inhabitants get over the need to run from him (this is where the Frankenstein parallel comes in). The film isn't particularly clever, just noisy and ugly, and one can't help but think of it as a Terminator knock-off. Van Peebles doesn't seem the ideal choice for an action hero along the lines of Arnold Schwarzenegger or Kurt Russell--who do this kind of thing well--but then again this is basically direct-to-video fodder. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars The Solo Film Like It In The World 29 July 2002
Format:VHS Tape
Solo is the type of film I could watch over and over again. Basically a mechanical soldier programmed to have no feelings develops a heart and teaches native people how to fight.
Unfortunately, his creators aren't too pleased, and neither are the natives' bosses.
It starts with an ace battle, then contains several more until a thrilling, fast-paced battle at the end.
Solo also develops a special friendship with not only the natives as a whole, but also with a small native boy who is the first to find him.
So basically, if you want Saving Private Ryan with a bigger heart and bigger meaning, then this is the film for you. Rent it first, to see if you like it, then if you feel the need (like I did) then buy it. I am not forcing you to buy it, but if you do, you will have an undisputed masterpiece in your collection forever.
Also, a very special note to Mario van Peebles, who gave it his all as Solo and really looked the part.

Caution: When you watch this for the first time, you might need a box of tissues with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An action pack thriller. 15 Sep 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Director Norberto Barba directed the independence "Blue Tiger" starring Virginia Madsen. Not a bad movie. And his next movie "Solo" is much better. Sure, nothing new about the plot. About a cyborg that somehow got soft spot in his "heart" and disobey direct order to destroy civilians. Eventually it is destroyed but guess what it survived. But the good thing about this DVD is the powerful sound. Until the recently released T2 special edition, I think this is one of the best sound for an action movie on DVD. Consider to add this title to your DVD collection if you are an action movie fans. I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Underate This movie--There are so far only 2 reviews 21 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This movie is underrated, and how are you supposed to tell how good it is with only 3 reviews? There are 3 different opinions here, but it is up to you who you believe. I really enjoyed this movie. It is almost like a PG-13 Terminator 2 with much less violence and a different plot. Solo is a "robot" that stumbles upon a village of Mexican Farmers. They are being attacked by stubborn rebels but Solo quickly gets rid of this threat. He teaches them how to fight back, and they get their turn for fighting back. Action-a little bit of love, a good plot-what more could you need? This story brings together the thought of friendship through tough odds and different races. The acting is quite good, the plot is believable, and it teaches you some good facts about how to live your life. Hatred--or friendship. Solo has his hands filled with battling soldiers, and even a new improved version of the same kind of robot he is.

THIS MOVIE IS NOT THE BEST IN THE WORLD, BUT IS DEFINITELY WORTH SEEING.

This cyborg called solo Knows how to think for himself and has emotions. He did belong to the army until he started to realize he was hurting innocent people so he wages a one-man-war against his own army when they look for him.The film could use a little more action but it was still pretty good.out of curiosity i think they should make a seqeul to it
