This mini-album is a mixed bag, comprising alternative versions of well-known The The songs plus a couple that are more obscure. It contains all four songs from the 'Disinfected' EP released in 1994 and, so far as I'm aware, is now the only way of getting hold of these tracks.

But it's worth buying for the minimalist take on 'This is the day' alone. Re-titled 'That was the day', this features only vocals, harmonica, organ and omnichord, playing to a cheapo preset rhythm style backing, and is a rare example of the usually oh-so-serious Matt Johnson and his muso colleagues having a bit of fun.

The revision of 'Helpline operator' from the Dusk album is also excellent.

"Solitude" comprises of different versions and mixes of The The song's; most of which are entertaining, but slightly inferior to the original versions (for example, "That Was The Day" and "Dis-Infected"). However, the live version of "Another Boy Drowning" does feature Johnny Marr; and included from the Shades of Blue EP are "Dolphins" and "Solitude", both of which are excellent songs. Unless you are a serious The The fan, then stick to the albums instead.

So pleased I bought this little gem. Live versions are always great, and good to hear some of the hits reworked. Please come to Australia!

Have to disagree with this being for fans only. The songs here stand up as fresh, great songs in their own right. I think it is an excellent recording.
