Phyllida Law: '...it's been lovely reading about Mattie. Any actress would love to play her.'

Product Description

The year is nineteen-ninety-five and Mattie, an original eccentric who lives on a decrepit houseboat called The Ark, has been in the habit of disappearing since she was a little girl. She calls these episodes of time to herself her Solitary Pleasures.

She is now knocking seventy and the family have gathered in the luxurious setting of her nephew’s large mock-Tudor house to discuss what’s to be done about her latest escapade – falling into the canal and driving home stark naked.

Mattie refuses to be bullied into behaving, but a shocking yet hilarious incident at an Animal Rights protest leads to Mattie’s arrest and results in her little dog Spike being wanted by the police. There’s nothing for it but to disappear again.

As Spike and Mattie retrace her footsteps of twenty years earlier along the South Downs Way, tantalizing her family with a paper-trail of Mattie's dotty poems, only one thing is certain, and that is that no one in the story will ever be quite the same again.

A lovely story 25 Feb 2012
By Ignite TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a family story and our main character, Mattie, is the one who tends to go off by herself when life gets tough. In the first half of the book we meet the members of the family and follow their story from childhood. In the second we go deeper into Mattie's life and I really warmed to her and her little dog Spike. In the course of the story, family secrets are revealed.
It's a lovely little book and full of humour and wisdom. I enjoyed it a great deal.

Wonderful 30 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
A wonderful piece of work that saddens the heart, and makes one mad at Gerald; although I loved my nan, I wished she'd been like Mattie: eccentric, lovable, wild, and enjoyed life. I highly recommend this as it shows old age, which comes to us all, isn't boring. Oh, and in parts, damn funny!

I absolutely loved this book, a total change from the thrillers and action stories that I tend to read. Nell Grey is a seriously under rated writer. She paints pictures with words; her prose flows like a brush over canvas. The shape of the story is defined in the opening papragraphs. It's a family setting with characters revolving around the central figure of Mattie and her little terrier Spike. They all interact like cogs in a complex mechanism with the story unfolding as dark secrets are revealed.

The narrative device of telling the story from the viewpoint of each character works very well. This is entirely due to the skill of the author who makes it look easy because she does it so well. The story moves forward seamlessly as each character adds detail to the emerging picture of a family circle in turmoil. There is dysfunction beneath a veneer of respectability. Each character is different but their voice is distinct and credible.

Nell Grey's writing is incredibly emotive. There are scenes of comic genius; Spike's interlude with a Chief Constable is pure slapstick. But there are equally touching scenes of love and loss. These are people with whom a reader can empathise. It's easy to understand their motivations and actions. I believe Nell Grey is an astute observer. She captures and conveys the characteristics of people and animls and sets them in a living landscape. This is an amazing talent.

The narrative is also a vehicle (in context) for her poetic works. It's not something I would normally enjoy, but it works so well here. A couple of the shorter pieces reminded me of Belloc. Simple, but with a sting in the tail. And for what it's worth, I think the cover is stunning. I've only seen it in thumbnail, but it's dramatic, stark and haunting. It sets the scene for the story exceptionally well.

I'm now a huge fan of this author whose works defy definition. Thank you for this book and for adding a new dimension to my reading. Brilliant.
