Reviews

Comedy drama starring Michael Douglas as Ben Kalmen, who finds his life is falling apart. Ben used to have a successful business, a wife who loved him and a beautiful apartment, but he subsequently lost it all when he was unable to resist his urges. Although he is now divorced from his wife, Nancy (Susan Sarandon), he maintains a relationship with his daughter, Susan (Jenna Fischer), and her son. There is hope for Ben when it turns out his girlfriend, Jordan (Mary-Louise Parker), has contacts that could lead him back into the business world. But when Ben takes Jordan's daughter, Allyson (Imogen Poots), on a college tour, his ability not to give into temptation is tested.

This 2009 movie, for reasons I don't quite understand, seemed to vanish without trace and got mixed reviews.

Ben Kalmen (played by a superb Michael Douglas), was once a successful New York car dealer, but his life has hit the skids due to bad business decisions and romantic indiscretions.
He is going broke, borrowing money from his daughter Susan, and is unwilling to accept his age, a heart problem, and a continuing sexual appetite for younger girls.

Ben accompanies the daughter of his wealthy and powerful girlfriend to her college interview. Young Brit posh-tottie Imogen Poots plays the 18 year old daughter Allyson role with a flawless US accent. Ben is an alumnus of this university and even a building donor during his more prosperous days.

Ben meets an impressionable student named Daniel (Jessie Eisenberg) on campus who appreciates his wisdom and advice. Ben unwisely ends up in bed with Allyson, who blurts this news to her mother, who is furious and declares war on him, using her cash and influence to make his life miserable.

Michael Douglas is on top form here, with help from a great supporting cast and a fantastic script. Admittedly, it may appeal more to a male audience, particularly with a middle aged one, who will readily identify with the dilemma faced with growing old, facing your mortality yet having to deal with the need for still generating cash no matter what, and handling sexual imperatives which really don't change much from adolesence.
You will not be disappointed.

Great story, great acting and great fun. That's what you get in "Solitary Man". Michael Douglas at his best and great supporting actors leaded by Danny De Vito (good to see him back in a good role).

Read the reviews and was excited to watch this, found it all a bit slow and the ending was a bit of a let down.

As the title of this review suggests this movie is a solid waste of time.

'Solitary Man' is a result of an unmotivated storyline, mediocre acting and last but not least poor directing.
We follow a man who tries to keep up with the pace of his life while reluctanly loosening the grip of his former self. A man who once lived a life in the fast lane now feels himself getting older and weaker, and just ahead of him lies a bunch of issues involving his daughter, his health and more...

The above sounds fairly promising, but execution of this story is very poor. You never really feel any sympathy for the main role 'Michael Douglas' who does a mediocre acting gig - Not to be remembered I can assure you that.
And don't be fool by the cover where Jesse Eisenberg (who is loved by many) appears as an important character alongside Douglas! He is seldom featured in this movie, and when does appear he delivers a bad performance - very dull and you can't "feel" him.

All in all you should really avoid this piece of boring and uninspirational drama. Don't waste your time on this insignificant story that probably wouldn't win over even the most soft-heartened people.

BORING AND POINTLESS- 1,5/5
