Review

Even before you open Jane Sheehans new book, Sole Trader, it feels luxurious and looks inviting. Normally I wouldnt chose to read a business handbook, but I was intrigued to see what Jane had to say about getting established in the therapy business world. Whether it is her infectious down to earth approach or her enthusiasm which reaches out from the pages, I was surprised to find myself pulled in and actually enjoying reading it! It is very clearly laid out, with full page atmospheric pictures to introduce each chapter and it feels open, light and not at all heavy and businessy . The book is full of great tips, insights and stories to support her advice and each chapter has Action box to summarize what is being covered and what your next steps are. Jane starts off by addressing every therapist s biggest challenge... making that leap of faith into becoming a full time holistic therapist. From preparation, marketing, telephone skills to surviving the tough times, she carries you on a wave of positivity and self belief. Nothing seemed daunting or overwhelming even when it came to statutory disputes and resolution procedures. The book does only cover the legalities of a business in the UK, but this guide would be a huge asset to any independent therapist, no matter which country they live in. Sole Trader is so much more than a business handbook! I was delighted to also come across myself and Universally Rio on page 94! Thank you Jane! Sole Trader is a great read and I highly recommend it. --Sally Teixeiras, Universallyrio.com

The Sole Trader, though specific to the health practitioner, should be part of every entrepreneurs arsenal. I started to read this book with the determination necessary for one who despises the business angle of my profession. I dragged myself through the first few pages of business plans and market analysis. All of a sudden I was in a brand new world. Jane Sheehan has taken the driest of subjects and has filled the pages with the most useful information, dressed in her energy and love of life. It is a page-turner! She uses facts and personal stories of both successes and failures. It covers aspects no one has even thought of, within advertising analysis, interview tips, and from attracting clientele to sacking the ones that dont work out, from licenses for music used, to pricing in a recession. She covers the use and function of holidays, the art of negotiation in order to get the most in the best way, She shows you the value and use of pamper evenings, and traveling to spread your fame and fortune. If you wonder about a gift for your self or your self-starter friend, this is the best Ive seen on the market --Yvette Eastman, Touchpoint Reflexology, Canada

Product Description

'This book contains everything that I wish I knew then, that I know now, about starting and running a holistic therapy business.' Jane Sheehan is the UK's leading Foot Reader, author of 'Let's Read Our Feet!' and 'The Foot Reading Coach.' She acknowledges that most holistic therapists enter their field because they have a passion for their subject but have gaps in their business knowledge. In producing this book, Jane aims to demystify the theory and make it come alive through examples. Learn how to attract new clients, gain tips on negotiating, understand cash flow forecasts, overcome the fear of asking for your fee. If Jane's experienced it in her practice, then you're going to read about it in 'Sole Trader: The Holistic Therapy Business Handbook'

This book is written by someone ' in the business' and gives away her 'secrets' and tells mistakes she has made - so the new therapist particularly can go out there and market herself, set up her stall correctly at an exhibition etc - loads of good advice here. I have recommended this to all my students and gave the book as a prize in a draw for the classes who finished recently.

Thanks Jane - I would recommend this to new and experienced therapists alike.

Handy resource 24 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a decent book if you're just starting up as a complementary therapist and a useful reminder for those who have been dabbling for a while (like me)and finally decided to give it a full time go. Towards the end she gets very boardroom and uses a lot of business jargon - too much in my opinion. I would have liked to have seen more reference to the experiences of real people. In the book, the 'experiences' aren't referenced to the person or practice they are about. I found this slightly irritating as I would have liked to have been able to look up the business/practice/person who gave the advice. My only other issue is the weight of the book, it is quite heavy for it's size, so you won't want to travel with it.

A practitioner friend of mine showed me a copy of Jane Sheehan's "Sole Trader" and from the first glance I knew it was worth buying. The easy to read format is pleasing on the eye, and its detailed content is written in an informative yet informal style that oozes enthusiasm. I teach Amatsu Therapy, a complementary therapy, and as Amatsu isn't well known, many students struggle with setting up their businesses. Although excellent practitioners, some lack the key business skills and ideas that they need to set up a clinic and to find clients. Part of our course is a business module, and I bought each student a copy of "Sole Trader" as their set text, and I'm looking forward to working through it with them as they embark on their careers.

Although the book is designed for reflexologists, the sensible advice translates just as well to other therapies. I'd recommend it!
