Didnt know anything about this band until i got this. of course, i was aware of the gurvitz brothers from their solo work, baker gurvitz army, and of course, the gun. but somehow this all passed me by at the time for some reason. anyway, i checked it out and boy...this rocks! - the playing is excellent throughout, especially the guitarwork, and the majority of the songs here, i guess,a compilation from all their albums, are very strong. bit of a mystery why they didnt break through but they wouldnt be the first good band to be bypassed by the industry. The music? ok, heres the weird thing. this band , through the course of these two albums, manage to sound like almost every american based classic rock band from the mid to late 70's you can think of. boston/kansas/bachman turner overdrive/journey/peter frampton etc - but the thing is - they pre-date them!(and theyre english!) if these tracks had come out in 1980 rather than 1971/72 youd think this lot were jumping on the bandwagon, but it seems they anticipated the sound 4 or 5 years before it arrived! other bands ,contempory to them, that they resemble, are the likes of cactus and the james gang. even e.l.o on some songs! All in all then , a very interesting mix. im just sorry it took me so long to discover them!

since reviewing this album ive been listening to it a lot and it just gets better and better. i would give it five stars if amazon would allow me to re-grade it. it has some truly great songs on here. there are songs herein that , if the likes of razorlight or snow patrol would release now, then they would have number one hits and the press would be gushing themselves (not that they, or any other pop band today, have the class to write songs like this) - what a waste. i cant believe this lot didnt break through. buy this anthology immediately!

Three man army, Gun, Baker Gurvitz army, all big noises in the seventies and all featuring Adrian and Paul Gurvitz. these two brothers did everything they could think of to play their music to the masses, no matter who they played with or where, record contracts were signed and promises were made..but the boys never climbed to the dizzy heights of the popular artists league. if you had witnessed these guys playing their powerful rock music it wouldnt have gone by unnoticed .the groups that have been this good and not made it are everywhere as we all know. my problem is I could mention quite a few that did ,and shouldnt have.

I picked up on their first album just last year and was so blown away by it that I got hold of this to check out the next two ( this double CD gives you most/all ? of the three albums ).
The usual guarded expectations were at work, wondering if this band's stuff was going to diminish in quality as it went on - first album a real blinder, second album a bit of a pale imitation of the first one, third one under record company pressure for a 'hit', smoothed out production values etc... you know the story !
Well - no such tale here, as the quality of material on all three is of a consistently high standard. Any fans of early '70's Hard Rock with a melodic, inventive edge who haven't heard these albums are gonna love 'em !

Great musicianship spoilt by mostly average songs. These guys have great pedigree and know the right moves but the material needs work.

Three Man Army ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! 11 July 2005

This double cd set contains every song from the first three releases by Three Man Army-A Third Of A Lifetime,Mahesha, and Three Man Army Two. Plus it has three bonus cuts. This is a great price to pay for some very good rock 'n' roll if you get it used.
Excellent, Unsung Heroes Of Rock! 9 Feb. 2015

For those unfamilar with Three Man Army or the brothers Paul and Adrian Gurvitz who were the core of that group, they were active in the early to mid-1970s as a power trio on a par with few others. Stylistically, they could be considered a high octane folksy blues-rock. This compilation contains the entire catalogue of their career (at least what got released as TMA). The only quibble I have is that the songs are shuffled out of the sequence in which they would've appeared on the original three albums released in 1971, 1972 and 1974. However, the excellence of their performances here make up for that.

I myself had only known about the Gurvitz brothers as part of the Baker-Gurvitz Army which had gotten brief airplay in a radio special which used to run during the mid-1980s in my home area. I never really heard anything else from them until more recently, when I started listening to YouTube AMVs and discovered TMA songs amongst the lineup. Tracks like "Daze" and "Together" from their first album really caught my attention, but I've found that the rest of their catalogue covered on this anthology also deliver. Since this group's catalogue isn't available on MP3, I recommend looking for the new or used CDs if they're listed. It'll be worth the price!
