Upon starting this book I was optimistic as it is fast paced and easy to read. However, later in the book the vivid descriptions of the battle scenes got more and more long-winded and thus less enjoyable. One of these spanned pages and pages, and thus I was glad when the author got back to main characters and their interesting interactions.

I found this book most interesting as its descriptoins of trench warfare and the conditions endured by the soldiers matched a lot of the factual film which has been shown on TV

I have read several of the books in this series and found all entertaining. the author has spend some time researching the history of the Crimean War and the main characters therein. The stories also show to the reader how the British forces were treated by the military and by the politicians. Many have heard of Florence Nightingale but I am sure many have not really understood the conditions which are shown in these stories.
