Product Description

Product Description

Charles Hudson VC was one of the twentieth century's outstanding fighting soldiers. His military career through two world wars and in Russia in 1919 earned him a host of medals. He was also a man of deep feeling, an accomplished poet and, in many ways, a rebel. In this compelling biography, the author skilfully interweaves his own narrative insight with his father's wartime journals and other unpublished material. The narrative includes detailed personal descriptions of the Battle of the Somme and other actions. It recounts the authoress Vera Brittain's bitter reaction to the death of her brother Edward when under Hudson's command in Italy in 1918 and tells how Hudson, out of compassion for her feelings, did not reveal the truth until he met her in 1934. It tells of the extraordinary affair in the summer of 1940, when the Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden, asked a meeting of senior army commanders in the then beleaguered Britain whether, in the event of a successful German invasion, their soldiers would agree to be evacuated to Canada or whether they would insist on going home to support their families. The author examines Hudson's motivation in both wars and delves deeply into his complex, and highly courageous, character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating biography of a complex hero set in an era with which modern generations are losing touch, 12 Nov 2007
By S. H. V. Acland (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Miles Hudson has written a fascinating biography of his father. He has drawn extensively on journals written by Charles Hudson and then illuminated them with great sensitivity and insight based on his close personal relationship with his subject. The book gives a terrifying general picture of the horrors of the trenches in the First World War and helps the reader to understand how the soldiers of the time coped with those conditions. It also paints a vivid specific portrait of Charles Hudson and how he personally dealt with the privations and appalling dangers that he faced. Charles Hudson was an extremely intelligent man, as is clear from his ability to think for himself, occasionally ignoring the orders he was given if he thought there was a better way of achieving the desired objective. That his intelligence was combined with great sensitivity is evidenced by the fine poetry he wrote, much of which is quoted in the book. This mixture of intelligence and sensitivity makes his extraordinary bravery all the more remarkable, for he was totally aware of the probable consequences of the risks that he took in action. Miles Hudson throws interesting light on what could have formed such a remarkable character, and also shows the impact on his father in later life of the appalling events in which he took part. There are interesting episodes in Russia in the aftermath of the Revolution, peacetime soldiering between the wars, and the Second World War, especially Dunkirk. Because the book is written by someone who was so close to his subject, it provides a direct link for the reader to a generation which has nearly slipped away from us. The slightly old-fashioned elegant style of Miles Hudson's prose is well suited to providing this link. And if all that makes it sound like a very masculine book, it is worth saying that my wife enjoyed it as much as I did and we squabbled about who got to read it first!
