Synopsis

This violent drama is based on an allegedly historic encounter between white settlers and the Cheyenne Indians, of the west. Based on Theodore V. Olsen's novel ARROW IN THE SUN, the account enacts the struggle of a U.S. soldier named Honus Gant (Peter Strauss) and a white woman named Cresta (Candice Bergen) who has been captured by the Indians two years earlier. The pair is hoping to stay alive until they can reach the nearest army outpost. When the Cheyenne slaughter the paymaster's party, with which they have been travelling, the two carry on to encounter several unusual characters. Donald Pleasance is perfect in his portrayal of Isaac Q. Cumber, who holds them captive, while hoping to sell the Cheyenne guns, in order to acquire some of gold they stole from the paymaster. When Honus is wounded, Cresta goes ahead alone, only to discover that the army plans to wipe the Indians out entirely. She hopes to return to help Honus, and warn the Cheyenne to flee, before the handful of them that are left, are wiped out. Ralph Nelson directs, and keeps the allegiances even, revealing the true tragedy behind the conflict.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly conventional despite the controversy, 25 Jul 2008
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Take away the once-shocking finale and Soldier Blue isn't much of a movie. Much of it is a simple reversal of Western clichés, as Peter Strauss' unconvincingly naïve cavalryman is saved by Candice Bergen's tough-talking former Cheyenne white hostage after a massacre. While it's understandable that at the time the producers would need to play relatively safe for most of the running time to avoid alienating an audience reared on more traditional western fare, the big problem is that we never really get much of a sense of the Cheyenne culture, with the tribe introduced far too late in the film to provide any real emotional outrage as the film takes a sudden left turn into Mai-Lai allegory complete with shockingly bad makeup effects.

If the action cues in Roy Budd's score sound familiar, that's because he famously the gig by playing several cues from Jerry Fielding's The Wild Bunch that he passed off on the unsuspecting producer as his own, though the rest of the score is a much more 70s concoction. And in the familiarity stakes it's truly weird to hear David de Keyser and Robert Rietty redubbing the Cheyenne dialogue!

Although this version from Optimum restores most of the footage cut in previous UK issues, it's still cut by 6 seconds 'to remove the presence of cruel, dangerous and illegal horse falls in accordance with BBFC policy and Guidelines. An additional cut was required to similar horsefalls in the trailer.'

2.0 out of 5 stars Soldier Blue with a hint of red paint., 4 Jan 2009
This film was no doubt shocking in 1970 with its 'shocking' depiction of war, 'shocking' treatment of the Native American and 'shocking' acting.

You can see that the film-makers are trying to draw parallels with the Vietnam War and the horrors produced by the American mindset of the day but only about 15 minutes are spent showing us the Cheyenne people and 5 minutes of that is their complete annihilation. This was Peter Strauss' second picture and it helps if you bear that in mind -I'm not saying he was wooden but when he got shot -sap came out! Donald Pleasance on the other hand does a fine turn as a trader and Candice Bergen works hard to carry things along. I also found the 1970's quirky music off putting.

I can understand that those who saw this when it first came out would have been affected by it's content and judge it with that in mind. I was left disappointed. I don't however regret watching it and if you enjoy westerns too then of course you are duty bound to view it and form your own oppinion. Adios.
