Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Rival Realms is a world of knights and wizards, mercenaries, and thieves, where armies of Pegas Riders roam the wilderness and armadas of warships patrol the high seas in search of wealth and adventure. There are three races (not just the obligatory two) to choose from--the versatile Humans, the magical Elves, and the belligerent Greenskins--as you take your armies onward to victory across a fantasy backdrop of mythical beasts, unexplored worlds, and uncharted waters. With absorbing game play, an easy-to-use interface, in-depth tutorials, three immersive campaigns, a comprehensive level editor, Internet/network play for up to eight players and--a first for any RTS--the complete tailoring of all individual troops (not just the hero), Rival Realms offers gamers everything they've always loved in an RTS and adds a lot more of what they've always wanted!

4.0 out of 5 stars The next Warcraft!!! 12 May 2004
There is no other way that I can stress the quality of this game then by telling you that the game is wonderful! The reason why I think this is becasue I am a fan of the 'Warcraft' series, and when got my hands on this game i couldn't believe the quality which stood before my eyes! The game is similar to Wacraft in the repsect of the technologies and armies used. The fact that you have the choice to play as either Humans, Green skins (orc type creatures) or elves makes the game a lot more variable and challenging. All three armies are different from each other and have their own strengths and weaknesses. Along the way you could encounter other mythical creatures like dragons and sea serphents too! You can rage battle over land with calvalry and night units, sea- with barges and transport ships, and air - with flying horses and such animals! The game is a real time stategy that will keep you on your seat for many hours. Once you have completed all of the missions you can then battle for the survival of your army in single player missions (Which are similar to 'skirmishes' in the hit series 'command and conquer'). There is also a map editor, where you can design your own battlefield! What more could a game have?! All of this can be bought for under £5. It's a bargain. If there is anyone out there who is a fan of the old mythical films like "Jason and the argonaughts", or "Lord of the rings", then i think that you will find this game pretty good. I strongly recomend that anyone who is a fan of 'Real Time Strategy' games, should buy this title. Perhaps when you complete it you can frame it, because this is a work of art!

4.0 out of 5 stars Massively underrated game 29 Oct. 2013

I re-bought this game after playing it as a kid. It's often dismissed as a Warcraft clone but it actually has a lot to offer. 3 campaigns, 3 races, a map editor and a whole bunch of single maps to play on, plus multiplayer support. The game itself is good fun and includes RPG elements such as levelling troops, which you can "save" between levels and "hire" later on. Love the music and graphics. For me, it's a classic, but that may be due to a significant nostalgia factor.

Downsides are that the game is very old now, and as such the multiplayer support is poor (difficult to set up, sometimes crashes), there's no support for resolutions higher than 1024x768, and incompatibility issues with Windows 7 sometimes manifest in strange ways, like your troops becoming very slow (or sometimes completely unable) to heal over time.

I've been searching around for the source code for this game in order to try and rectify some of these issues, but to no avail.
