This book was bought by someone with some a very basic understanding of electronics and no solar experience.

Project number one was to connect up the shed with a good light and have a power source for low voltage items such as irrigation pumps. The book explained what equipment was needed and how to put it all together. Sourced the bits online, measured everything out and had it fitted in a couple of hours. This is a proper lighting system not something you would buy in a kit for £20. It was very easy to do and all made sense. The key was that the book told me what I needed to get.

Project number two is to specify a full blown off grid system overseas. I feel confident that this book would help me work out how to do a basic survey of the site, work out the power needed and put together a list for a nominated grown up to do the install. Some of the authors online resources are excellent in helping out with this.

Overall it is a great guide for understanding solar and for getting hands on with smaller projects.

Seems to be a great introduction to solar electricity generation on a domestic scale, for homes, sheds, boats and caravans. The sections on sizing your installation and surveying your site seem to be comprehensive enough to cover most DIY purposes. The instructions on installing a solar plant seem a little sketchy to me - perhaps they're comprehensive enough if you have a deeper grounding in electrical installation than I have or maybe I'm making more of it than I need to. The insolation tables are comprehensive for the UK, but I imagine that you might want to use the website for more localised information if you're based in America or Australia.

I like Michael Boxall's style - the book is well laid out, the prose is clear and the headings are specific enough to allow you to skip big sections that don't apply to your goals.

This is an excellent book of solar theory but it is best bought alongside a book of practical application, of which I recommend DIY Solar Projects by Eric Smith

Great book fopr the beginner or, like me, to gain a grounding of knowledge of low level generation. Lots of advice and information, very useful.
