Product Description

Irene has a husband, Adrian, three small children and - though she

doesn't know it - a marriage that is going wrong. When she discovers

that Adrian is having an affair, the family is blown apart.

Solace is a story of contrasts. While Adrian finds new love and excitement, Irene spirals into exhaustion, self-destruction and a kind of madness.

With their marriage in shreds and Adrian whisking their daughters on a trip of a lifetime ti Australia with his new lover, Irene finally reaches rock bottom. She decides to leave the unbearable silence of her home for a trip by herself to visit her brother Jem in France.

And as Irene soon realises, being along can mean discovering freedom, elation and even in the darkest of times, finding your solace.

I only read this because I enjoyed the author's debut novel (Things we knew were true) so much - I didn't think I'd find the intricacies of a marriage break-up that interesting. But I was completely wrong and, as usual, Gerrard had me hooked from the first few pages. She has such a talent in creating ordinary characters whom the reader can empathise with, feeling their fears, insecurities, hopes and dreams.

This book isn't just about a marriage break-up - it's about a woman who reaches rock bottom but slowly manages to rebuild her life. At first Irene appears weak and just a bit pathetic; she lets her husband walk all over her and it's evident she's lost her own identity over the years of being a mother and a wife. Circumstance allows her time to contemplate her life and her past and she eventually gets back on her feet, dusts herself down and tries to find the woman she once was. And by the end of the book I was cheering her on hoping like mad she would make it.

A powerful book which highlights the despair and suffering involved in a marriage break-up, but also emphasises the strength and determination which can occur as a result of this. Read it - you won't be disappointed.

I loved the last Nicci Gerrard book, and this one was no dissapointment. Fascinating view of a marriage in collapse and what happens to Irene in the aftermath. The descriptions of the chaos and the neverending work involved in family life. Reminded me in a strange way of Joanne Harris and chocolat. A woman finding herslef after years of marriage and motherhood. Having time to breath and discover who she truly is. excellent!

OK... 7 Oct 2008

I was a little disappointed with this novel. I had previously read 'Moment you were gone' which I thoroughly enjoyed and expected high things of this book, however I felt this book was disappointing in comparison. I found the book really hard to get into however it did get better. I did find the main character slightly annoying however I did warm to her. The book is about love loss and betrayal and I do think the author portrays these emotions well. On the whole an ok book but it could have been a bit more fast paced at the start.
