5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful tale of love, loss and hope 24 Oct 2005
Format:Paperback
I only read this because I enjoyed the author's debut novel (Things we knew were true) so much - I didn't think I'd find the intricacies of a marriage break-up that interesting. But I was completely wrong and, as usual, Gerrard had me hooked from the first few pages. She has such a talent in creating ordinary characters whom the reader can empathise with, feeling their fears, insecurities, hopes and dreams.
This book isn't just about a marriage break-up - it's about a woman who reaches rock bottom but slowly manages to rebuild her life. At first Irene appears weak and just a bit pathetic; she lets her husband walk all over her and it's evident she's lost her own identity over the years of being a mother and a wife. Circumstance allows her time to contemplate her life and her past and she eventually gets back on her feet, dusts herself down and tries to find the woman she once was. And by the end of the book I was cheering her on hoping like mad she would make it.
A powerful book which highlights the despair and suffering involved in a marriage break-up, but also emphasises the strength and determination which can occur as a result of this. Read it - you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written view of a marriage in turmoil 26 April 2005
Format:Paperback
I loved the last Nicci Gerrard book, and this one was no dissapointment. Fascinating view of a marriage in collapse and what happens to Irene in the aftermath. The descriptions of the chaos and the neverending work involved in family life. Reminded me in a strange way of Joanne Harris and chocolat. A woman finding herslef after years of marriage and motherhood. Having time to breath and discover who she truly is. excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling 12 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I embarked on this novel with mixed feelings, having read the other reviews. However I found myself being drawn into it and having gone through a marriage break up myself, with a young child, could relate to many episodes the book explored. By around half way through the book I didn't want to put it down and totally related to the sense of having come through a harrowing time with a new sense of purpose once the worst that can happen to a marriage explodes in your face. Go Irene!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicci Gerrard's 'Solace' 30 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This faired better than the usual Nicci Gerrard fiction whose female protagonists are usually overcharged emotionally and drop-outs from society who are extremely irritating.
She managed to capture the deja vu nsotalgia of a past relationship which was well done and her structure and plots are usually good

5.0 out of 5 stars Solace: Fantastic read! 15 July 2013
Format:Paperback
Solace is a story of rebirth and of coming alive..it centers around Irene, a woman who has lost her joe de vivre and her sense of self in her marriage and how through her marriage break up she rediscovers herself. It is a beautifully written, evocative book that explores the issues of marriage and infidelity. Reading it makes you feel a whole gamut of emotions and her descriptive style of writing is so comforting its like sitting next to a crackling fire, with a mug of hot chocolate whilst a storm rages outside...very comforting read. Highly recommended!! I loved it!
