Review

'This is an excellent textbook. One of the best textbooks on Soil Mechanics. Clear and concise explanations of theory. Good drawings and diagrams to illustrate theory. Excellent worked examples and exercises for the student to practise.'  - J.W. Glenn, Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education, UK

Product Description

Now Eurocode compliant – in line with the compulsory new design codes brought in across the EU and increasingly adopted worldwide.

In Soil Mechanics, Barnes clearly sets out the principles of soil behaviour and shows how engineers have applied these solutions in practice, making this an accessible, highly readable and yet comprehensive textbook for core courses in civil and ground engineering, and a handy resource book for practitioners.

This fully revised third edition:

■ is now Eurocode compliant, with a new chapter on the geotechnical Eurocodes
■ features worked examples incorporating the Eurocode limit state design principles, allowing readers to use the new codes confidently
■ includes a range of case studies that demonstrate key problems and how engineers have tackled them
■ uses clear diagrams throughout to illustrate key aspects of soil mechanics and photographs to enhance understanding

The solutions manual can be found at www.Palgrave.com/engineering/barnes/solutions

This is by far the best and most helpful Soil Mechanics book I have ever read. I have never found it to be short of an answer on any area of basic Soil Mechanics.

Ideas and principles are explained clearly and concisely at a level at which those new to the subject will easily be able to follow. These first principles are then followed up at a greater depth.

Diagrams are plentyful and example questions together with case studies of Soil Mechanics problems appear at the end of every chapter.

For students and those trying to get to grips with Soil Mechanics I cannot think of a more desireable and friendly text.

Barnes presents what could very well be the only introductory to basic text that a civil or ground engineering student would need.

It presents all of the key, overarching concepts needed for soil mechanics, and generally in a more comprehensive, clear way compared to similar texts.

Good use of diagrams and good reference texts ensures that if Barnes doesn't have it, he knows who does.

The book also touches on, to some extent, the basics of foundation engineering, although deep foundations aren't dealt with too well.

Overall though I would agree with many academics that Barnes is the best introduction or basic reference for soil mechanics available.
