4.0 out of 5 stars Batlles of the world: Compeling but not complete, 21 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Battles of the world is a facinating historical guide. If you are in to history you will love this! The menus are clear and easy to use, and finding the battle you want to study out of the list is easy. And with alexanda the great showing you around it cant get any easier. Once you have selected which battle you want to study the rest is truely impressive. In an easy to understand layout the major parts of the war are illustrated by pieces of a chess game on a battlefield. Options include words of war weapons Tactics and leaders. There is also text on the background to the battle, and the aftermath. But where this refference cd truely comesinto its own is the battle sequence. Just sit back and relax as the battle takes place before your eyes. Watch as the blocks that resemble the armies form and when crucial parts of the battle heppen a zoom in version of events are shown. With running commentary by alexanda the great and the amazing detail that the cd goes into is truely mindblowing. But as ever there is catch. Even though the battles detailed are very good there is a very limited selection. At the start the cd boasts that it contains all the battles that changed the world in it. I can honestly say that it doesn't. What battle's could be more important in modern history than D-day or the battle of the somme. They are quite astounding in their absence. And quite astonishing in its admittance is the gulf war, it did not shape history. And although the range of type of warfare is impressive, many of them are not known to the leyman and thus diminishes the joy of them. Overall however this a great refferance cd for anyone in the family that will give you hours of joy. A fantastic buy and as the proffesor himself says in "ask the expert":- "War is the locomotive of history it pushes it along...and anyone who does not study the past is doomed to relive it"

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 2 Sep 2004
By R. Servini "robs882002" (england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is truly a new idea, there is Alexander the Great is claims to be the most successful General ever. Most would agree.
Some would say Genghis Khan was more successful , but obviously he would be a bad person to introduce the battles contained in the CD.

I hope another cd in this series is produced since this cd is excellent.

Robert
