Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Children who love everyone's favourite penguin will adore Pingu and Friends. Packed full of the slick graphics the BBC excels at producing, very young ones will love the package just because they can watch one of their favourite characters at work. Children who can master the mouse or keyboard, however, will get much, much more out of the games.

Dance with Pingu and his friends, and repeat their sequences to build pattern and sequential reasoning; snowball your friends and improve hand-to-eye co-ordination, aim and fine motor skills (but don't hit the washing or grandma, or you will be in trouble!); improve your memory in "Pingu Pairs", a kind of ice-age Pelmanism that is graphically superb and a definite highlight of the whole package.

Just the menu screen is delightful: an icy scene that allows you to select your games and changes hue as snow falls come and go. All in all, this is a fantastic package worthy of the BBC name. --Lucie Naylor

But the best part is they learn while they play: basic keyboard and mouse skills, hand-to-eye co-ordination, fine motor skills, memory exercises and problem solving are all part of the pack.

There are plenty of fun games to play on this cd which has kept my two youngest children fully entertained for quite long periods at a time. It is narrated by Felicity Kendal who explains clearly what to do in each game. Some features of the cd do not require the mouse to be clicked but for the cursor simply to be moved over a picture in order for something fun happen. This makes it paricularly good for small hands to work.

There is a lively art feature that even my older children enjoy. Each game has several levels of difficulty and teaches a fundamental skill as well as providing entertainment. The player can enjoy games inside Pingu's igloo as well as outside in the snow so there is always plenty to do. Children much over the age of five may tire of this cd quite quickly but those from two upwards will find it enduring fun.

The Pingu and friends CD-ROM contains eight activities of variable quality, aimed at children aged 3 to 6, but probably better for the younger end of that range. The CD is good, but it could have been better. Many of the activities are imaginative and good fun (as well as having educational content): among these are tossing the pancakes, snowbowl alley, rescuing Pinga from a ledge in a cave and Pingu pairs. Another excellent feature is the art igloo which has a very wide range of images and colours to chose from for drawing, colouring or dot-to-dot. Other activities are weaker: counting the cakes offers good number practice, but is visually dull, as a series of cakes lands on the plate from one side of the screen (at easy level) - over and over and over - with the only variation being that the number of cakes differs each time. Ice dancing is also more limited than it could have been, as Pingu and his friends can only 'dance' in a restricted area of the screen and Pingu is limited to one partner at a time. The storybook feature is also a little disappointing. The idea of fitting the story back together again is good, but the stories are so simple (even at medium or high level) that there is little challenge involved. My two-and-a-half year old son is definitely enjoying this CD and getting alot out of it, but as a parent I am put off it by its rather worthy and BBC-style approach and the repetitive nature of its commentary. Completion of each task is greeted by a measured and unchanging "Well done, you have helped Pingu get three pancakes" or "Well done, there are 8 cakes on the plate" etc which is considerably more irritating to listen to (over and over) than say, Glub the Sub's enthusiastic range of praise - 'fantastic !', 'puzzle-champion !', 'super-mouse-clicking !' . The CD has the feel of something designed to impress pre-school teachers rather than something meant to be lively fun for pre-schoolers at play. This should not deter anyone from buying it: it is good value and offers hours and hours of play, but it could have been better if its developers had loosened up a bit and exploited Pingu's mischievous spirit a little more. A major redeeming feature is that it's very easy to turn off the organ music so that you don't have to be driven round the bend by that. It's also good to find something featuring BBC characters for Mac-users, as much other BBC software is only available for PCs.

pingu and friends 5 Oct 2000

Format:CD-ROM
This cd rom provides literally hours of entertainment for children from 3-6 years. The skill levels can be adjusted to suit the child, so is interesting for a 3 year old and also challenges a six year old. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The emphasis is on counting, matching, memory, some reading and it really improves the child's mouse skills and concentration. This is a favouite.
