I was completely addicted to sodas from name brands and this product converted me 100% to a "soda-by-me" person. I make a couple liters every weekend and drink them throughout the week for a FRACTION of what I used to pay for store-bought sodas. It also gives me some bragging rights to say I am being green by not having those 400+ bottles/cans I went through every year.
She loves making soda and adding some real fruit juice for a light and refreshing drink that isn't filled with unnatural ingredients. This also makes a great substitute for sodas and fruit juices for our kids. They love making the drinks themselves.
The machine is idiot proof and very sturdy, the CO2 containers are easy to exchange through the company's website or in our local stores, and the flavors (which I was most critical of before purchasing) are all fantastic. I personally recommend the diet soda and diet root beer. I was extremely surprised at the sheer number of options the company offers for flavor choices and brand name substitutes. I also like that this company only sells products sweetened with Splenda - no aspartame!
Finally, I should mention something I consider most important: Everyone who is a guest in our home now gets to make their own soda when they come over (any flavor they like). It is a HUGE hit and a real conversation starter. After trying ours, at least 10 of our friends have purchased this in the last 3 months and all of them use the machines constantly.
I would highly recommend you try this product. It is something you'll enjoy regularly, you'll save money (especially if you drink any kind of soda or sparkling water more than once a week) and feel good knowing you are using one of the few green, sustainable products in the market (this product uses no power - cords or batteries!).
The Sodastream is quite tall but relatively slim so it doesn't take up much counter space. Screwing in the CO2 gas bottle is pretty easy. It comes with 2 one litre bottles.
The first thing I made in it was a bottle of fizzy cordial - the cordial came from the supermarket, I put a measure into the Sodastream bottle, topped up with water and then repeatedly pressed the gas injector until I heard the farting noise that means the correct gas pressure has been reached in the bottle.
The results were very good but I didn't like the idea of taking up a whole bottle for a single flavoured drink. Since then I have filled the bottle with tap water and chilled it in the fridge before injecting the gas - this allows more gas to be absorbed (apparently). I then make up whatever drink I want by mixing cordial and fizzy water in a glass.
The screw tops on the bottles seem to retain the fizziness for a long time.
One other thing I have tried is making fizzy wine, with mixed success. If you fill the Sodastream bottle to the maximum line the wine will get fizzy but it releases loads of bubbles as you remove it from the Sodastream machine and you end up with wine squirting everywhere - you have to spend ages cleaning it out of the Sodastream. The trick is to chill the wine first and to only fill the bottle to half capacity. Then release the bottle gradually, letting the bubbles settle before releasing a bit more.
The taste results on the sparkling wine were good. The best one was a sparkling red made with a full bodied Shiraz - the taste was comparable to shop bought sparkling reds that cost almost a tenner a bottle. The key is to serve it cold - it tastes like filth if you serve it at room temperature.
I got a spare cylinder from Lakeland at Liverpool One and plan to exchange empty cylinders there or by their postal service for a fraction of the full regular cost...
Best of all once you have a cylinder or two with c02 in them and some flavour, (optional,) the main ingredient is tap water! And fresh too, heavy might be the cylinder(s) to carry but less big bottles of coke to carry too!
Also makes fizzy wine .
