This has to be one of the most innovative knitting books we've seen for a while, and an essential purchase for anyone who loves making socks or wants to learn how. --Knit Today

'Packed with information and advice, this crucial reading paves the way for lots of happy sock knitting' --Simply Knitting

Product Description

"Socks A La Carte" is the ultimate resource for sock knitters who want to design their own original patterns without starting completely from scratch. General instructions at the beginning of this book outline the basics of sock construction, including measuring feet and making calculations based on gauge. The unique flip section is where the pages are divided into three categories: cuff, leg and sock body, which includes the heel and toe. Readers can flip these pages to see how the individual elements work together and then mix and match these patterns to create unique sock style that they can then knit according their personal preferences. A bonus gallery will feature a number of finished sock styles in a variety of colours as inspiration for the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars A feastfull of socks., 30 May 2009
This review is from: Socks A La Carte: Pick and Choose Patterns to Knit Socks Your Way (Spiral-bound)
Be a little different with your footwear! This simple to use flip book gives options for different patterns of sock parts: cuff, leg and body. Read the instructions first to ensure a good fit of sock, and have the option of using four needles or twin/wire needles. Encouraged to design your own socks, you will find the instructions are to the point and clear to follow. Bring back socks!

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 6 Dec 2009

I didn't find this book as helpful as I had hoped. The yarn used for the photographs made it very difficult to see the textures and patterns. All the socks appeared to be the same size with little useful advice on how to adapt the size to fit. I would have like to have seen more variety in the leg sections, being the part most people will notice in a sock. The book uses American sizes and terminology, although there is a conversion chart. Having said that, the instructions were very clear and easy to follow, and guided me through my first pair of socks. I went elsewhere for my second pair however.

After reading the reviews on this book I was sold, but unfortunately it was not quite what I expected. All the socks are knitted in the same yarn by SWTC, so no variation but you can subsitute. I also found finding needle sizes used listed under yarn choices, which would make sense as there is only one yarn type but it took a while to find after looking through most of the book after missing them the first time.

All the patterns are great and the split pages with the pictures of the sock parts (not the patterns themselves)are great for mixing and matching designs. I would not recommend this for a complete beginner but something to work towards.
