Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Now you can easily get around town while on a business trip or never get lost on that "family road-trip" using Socket's Bluetooth GPS Receiver. From your Bluetooth enabled mobile device, like a Pocket PC, laptop computer, or new Tablet PC, you can connect easily to the Socket GPS Receiver and know where you are using a variety of NMEA compliant software. Since this GPS product does not use your device’s CompactFlash or PC card slot, you still have expandability.

This "Socket GPS" is a rebadged Emtac device and one of the few GPS receivers which support Bluetooth. Unlike the Fortuna GPSmart The Socket device has no internal screen and so its only function is to make GPS data available over Bluetooth. This has to be the best receiver I have used in terms of sensitivity and start times. In the car it does not need an external antenna, it works perfectly well in the glove box. My host device is a Palm Tungsten T and the combination is a good one, setup only requires pairing with the Socket/Emtac. Note: the pairing code is hard-wired and is 0183, this doesn't appear to be documented which I found a little strange. Battery life is 6 hours if used continuously from an integral Li-Ion battery cell. Other bits and pieces supplied are a car charger, AC charger and windscreen adapter (this may vary between Emtac and Socket 'versions').

This device is known to work flawlessly with Pocket PC based PDAs, Palm devices with Bluetooth (integral or through SD card) or with a PC Bluetooth adapter. I have read that the Emtac CRUX II software is not supplied with the Socket badged version of this kit, again this is odd as the software is quite useful. It provides detailed information about the state of the device and allows protocol settings to be altered as well as the power mode of the device.

In conclusion, an excellent device but try and find the Emtac badged version to get the Crux II software. This gets five stars because it outshines all other PDA GPS devices I have used.

A Little Gem 9 Oct 2003
By JC
It took a lot Internet research to find this little gem but it has paid off as it really does deliver what it claims. It was easy to pair with my Dell Notebook and the whole process took about five minutes. I use it with MS AutoRoute and again there was no problem setting up the GPS tracking features - the accuracy and refresh rate is very impressive.

The product box contained no software but if you have MS AutoRoute, or similar, this shouldn't prove a problem. Also included was a handy in-car charger which can charge your PDA at the same time as well (nice touch) and a leather wallet to keep the GPS Receiver in good condition when not required. However, it may be worth investing in a mains charger and, if your car has a solar windscreen, the extended antennae. These can be purchased at the UK Socket website.

This product is a 5 Star Product and Amazon is selling it at a very competitive price.
