During an interview in 1980 Jimmy James remarked on the remarkable satorial elegance of his audience at the start of each of his shows and contrasting that to the sweat drenched dishevelled heap that enthusiastically roared for more at the end - in his words, "at the end of the night they were working even harder than the band!". Listening to this excellent 2CD survey of his 60's career one can easily believe it. If James wasn't the best of the UK based soul singers of the '60s he was definitley in the top 5. The live cuts that make up the end of disc 1 transports you to a sweaty steamy night club with the Vagabonds relentless rhythms caught with the least concession to perfect hi-fi sound but loaded with atmosphere and excitement. It may be a rash statement but listen also to the studio cut "This heart of mine", famously recorded by the Artistics and James can lull you into believing he cut the original. And I'll go a step further. I believe his version of "Red red wine" to be the definitive one and that's included in all it's glory on Disc 2. James had more success in the '70s by recording singles with UK based disco merchant Biddu, but these tracks reveal the sheer power and talent of a hard-working soul act, essentially a covers band in the absence of hard to get originals in the 60's, but each interpretation had their own stamp on it. The Northern soul crowd have recognised his qualities for many years, now spread the word. People get ready!
