Book Description

20 Mar 2009
Take your sock knitting off the charts! Cookie A., pioneer of the unconventional sock - think traveling stitches, mirrored pairs, twists on the heel, cables and lace - shares her secrets for making rule-breaking socks in Sock Innovation. Even if you haven't been bitten by the sock bug, you will find fascinating technique information! Sock Innovation aims to increase the skills of any sock knitter by exploring design and advanced stitch manipulation. Fueled by Cookie's unique approach, you'll be able to make modifications to suit your needs and aesthetics (and not just in sock patterns). Sock Innovation goes beyond the basic sock and explores complex stitchery, treating the sock as a knitted canvas where elements are strategically and intentionally placed. Cookie guides you through the details of her design process, which include: Choosing a stitch pattern to adapting it to be worked in the round, turned upside-down and inside-out, widened or narrowed Stitch manipulations covered in detail including resizing, texture modification, and converting between flat and in-the-round Plus, clear and thorough inventive instructions, accompanied by photographs and illustrations, so you'll learn to invent your own socks with unique details In addition to a thorough exploration of her own techniques, Cookie presents 15 original new designs with floral lace patterns, angular geometric shapes, and unusual cables. Inspired by women and men among her friends and family, these socks display an incredible range of style and complexity, from sweet and simple to delightfully imaginative.

Product Description

Review

Physically this is one book, but its contents can easily be divided into two sub-books. First, you get a mind-bendingly thorough design and technique master class. And second, you get a collection of 15 gorgeous, innovative, and extremely tempting sock patterns. In the first half of the book, Cookie reveals an array of invaluable design secrets. We're not just talking about toes and gussets here, although she outlines those with great clarity. Likewise, she explains afterthought heels in a way that makes me want to cast on and experiment right now. We're talking things like inverting stitch patterns so that you can knit them both in the round and in right-side/wrong-side rows. Also, converting and re-charting flat stitch pattern charts into charts you can follow in the round. Cookie writes with intelligence and passion, and assumes the same degree of intelligence and avidity in her reader, which makes this book an extremely refreshing read. She has a gift for explaining things we may already know instinctively, but in a way that finally gives us an "a-ha!" moment of true revelation. These are small things, like how we should decrease cable stitches when transitioning from cables to stockinette in order to prevent puckering in the fabric. Cookie then proceeds to deliver 15 original new designs. Her socks are not simple stockinette affairs, they tend to have the stunningly ornate and sculptural detail of a Gothic cathedral. While these may look complicated, they are entirely achievable by any knitter who knows how socks work, can read a chart, and has a little patience. Cookie A's sock patterns have been so popular that I know expectations were very high for this book. Having spent some time with it, I can say that the book meets and exceeds every expectation I had. This is a brilliant and valuable book that every avid sock knitter will want to own.-Knitter's Review An exciting book that will take the average sock knitter beyond their normal realm. The projects are quite challenging so I think it would be more useful for readers who can already knit socks and would like to move to the next stage. The projects and tutorials are extremely well presented and clearly laid out, with plenty of photos and a lot of helpful advice. It is definitely great value for money with lots of useful information and an array of challenging projects.-Craft Business Thought you knew everything about sock knitting? Think again! This book takes the craft of socks to a whole new level, exploring the principles of sock pattern symmetry, cables that travel off the grid, and how to make your own designs work hard for their yarn. It's advanced, almost mathematical stuff, yet clearly and carefully explained - this is incredibly rewarding knitting.-AllAboutYou.com One of the most hotly-anticipated knitting books of 2009, Cookie A's first book is an excellent introduction to both knitting and designing socks, as well as being packed with her typically intricate designs. [This] is a book of two halves, and unlike most pattern books not only encourages you to branch out - to make changes, to create your own designs, to innovate - but teaches you how to go about it. The first 50 pages delve into the elements of sock design. Cookie keeps the pages clutter-free and informative, packing them with details which will interest sock knitters of all stripes: for budding designers, the glimpse into her process and technical information is invaluable, while for knitters keen to develop their skills the technical information about different sock toes and heels or reading charts is clear and well-presented. While the book is worth a look for the technical information alone, the 15 patterns are both varied and interesting, using a wide range of skills and stitches. As Cookie comments in the introduction, "Any technique that can be used in a sweater can be done on a smaller scale in a sock. They provide the perfect learning ground for knitting design." Knitting socks is the ideal way to learn new techniques, and we hope that her beautiful, elegant designs will encourage knitters to dive in, try a cable, and prodjce a pair of lovely and unique socks.-Simply Knitting

3.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you know who the publisher is 31 May 2009
By Ponytail VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
...because you're going to need to be very familiar with their website as you look up the nine pages of corrections ! I wish I'd known this before buying this book. I love Cookie A's designs, I think she's a genius but my goodness, how did so many errors get through ? The complexity of some of her designs means that it's very difficult to see where the mistakes occur beforehand. Which means, you could be halfway through a sock and suddenly realise your stitch count is off. And worse, you might assume it's your fault !
This would be an easy five out of five for the book - there are brilliant patterns AND tons of information on how to design/adapt your own socks. However, with so many errors, I don't have much confidence in setting out making anything until I've checked that others have completed a pattern first, and spotted the errors for me. A real pity - let's hope there's a second/revised edition soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to Cookie A's test knitters? 18 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've got to go with the comment about errors in this book. The advice, information and the patterns themselves are wonderfully inventive and had me grabbing for my needles ready to cast on. After, that is, I printed out all the pages of amendments and inserted each page into my new book with a pencilled note of where every error is on the relevant pages so that I don't hopelessly flounder around trying to work out why the pattern won't go right. Who wants to write on the pages of a book anyway? And with no apology either!

When you buy a pattern book, surely a basic requirement is error-free patterns - or am I living in Cloud Cuckoo Land?

Ranting over, the patterns (with or without errors) are in a class of their own and you just know you are going to knit every one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting there but! 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This book feels like one for the "specialist" rather than the plain enthusiast-the instructions for the patterns are quite difficult to follow without sheer determination to achieve the desired result of some rather fantastic socks. For a specialist I would rate the book as 5 star but for buying online it needed more explanation of what to expect. I have yet to complete the first of my pair of socks.... these are serious projects rather than quick results for cold feet.
Yet I do think it is a worth while purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars So inspirational, but so many errors! 29 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
The designs are fantastic and so clever. The design section is informative not just to newbies but more experienced knitters. I just wished that there were not so many errors. It's bit disheartening and distracting. It's often not obvious that there is a problem with the pattern or an error by the knitter and it's just not fun to have pile of erratas tucked into the book.

I would recommend that the less intrepid and perfectionists to wait for the second edition when the problems have been corrected. It's a shame really, because I want to make everything in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sock Innovation 16 May 2009
Format:Paperback
Wonderful book - fantastic patterns, mainly for the advanced knitter and a great help for designing your own socks and getting the perfect fit. Some of the patterns are quite challenging but well worth the effort.
