Product Description

Product Description

This is the sixth edition of an established and highly successful introduction to sociology for medical students and health professionals of all kinds. It will also be of value for sociology students.

Sociology as Applied to Medicine introduces students to the social context of health and illness in an understandable and accessible way - a number of reviewers have commented on its lucid and jargon-free text. The curriculum in medical schools now lays more emphasis than in the past on the social context of medicine, making this book even more indispensable.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it's clarity, 10 Mar 2003
I like this book because it is set out in a way where you don't face just pages of text. It is easy to extract information from with summaries and tables of data and a really well cross referenced index. I'm an undergraduate social studies student and have learnt from other study that this type of book gives loads of easy to access information.Although it's title is sociology, I use it mostly in my health and social studies modules. Previous to this course I practised as a nurse, so i can more than vouch for the sociology component of this book being very accurate.I still think it it worth buying especially for anyone who has not worked in the health service.I would recommend this book without reserve. The only problem at the moment for anyone engaging in health studies is that there is a dearth of literature on the 'Third Way'or how the changes in training of doctors and nurses have affected social dynamics. This review is quite serious despite my choice of nickname and place - cummon i'm a student!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great companion to medical sociology, 22 Jun 2004
By A Customer
This revised and updated version of Sociology as Applied to Medicine promises a comprehensive readable introduction to medical sociology, and certainly does deliver. Its nineteen chapters cover topics ranging from the Doctor-Patient Relationship, through Health and Healthcare of Ethnic Minority Groups, to Organizing and Funding Health Care. Each one is meticulously referenced, covering both current journals and classic sociological texts. Important theories and studies are summarised, saving busy medical students the chore of trawling through the daunting original papers, and every paragraph is highly relevant. This is the ideal stand-alone companion to most current courses of medical sociology.

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer to a medic's sociology needs., 15 Dec 2001
By ajinkya11@yahoo.com (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A very readable and concise account. It covers all the relevant issues in the undergraduate medical course. This book takes the stress out of studying sociology in the medicine course as it does not overcomplicate anything. A great book and a great buy, I strongly recommend this for any one studying sociology as part of their course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Medical sociology book ideal for medical students
Good points:
+ *Very* well written - the authors are very litterate in explaining a topic that needs to be explained carefully in order not to be misunderstood. Read more
