2.5 stars, Good hero but secondary character is more exciting than the heroine 9 Feb 2011
By Melissa - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a title Society's most Disreputable Gentleman is not very fitting for Julia's Justiss's novel. A more apt one is Society's Most Honorable Gentleman in Love with Society's Colorless Lady. I genuinely like the hero of this novel, Greville. He has a unique story and he is noble and hardworking. The problem mostly with this story is the heroine who pales in comparison and not only with the hero but with her dynamic younger cousin.

Greville Anders is a gentleman connected to noble houses in England. He was something of a rogue and found himself impressed as a seaman. He is a war hero suffering from wounds and through connections arrives at heroine Amanda Neville's home. Her father has agreed to allow Greville to recuperate at his home.

When Amanda first sees the bedraggled Greville she is almost contemptuous of him because of his dress and manner (he is woozy from laudanum and his painful journey); I did not like her initial response to him. Amanda acts as hostess at her father's home since her mother recently passed away. Also living with Amanda is her teen aged cousin Althea who is a scene stealer. I simply adored this character and if this book had starred this outspoken, lively, energetic girl I would have been highly engrossed in the story.

For the first half of the novel Amanda keeps herself rather distant from the hero and berates her younger charge on her actions. Amanda's goal is to go to London and find a politically connected, titled fellow. This was her mother and grandmother's dream for her and she has adopted it too.

Greville is a wonderful hero, egalitarian, gentlemanly, thoughtful and patient. He is never condescending to young Althea and he is long suffering with Amanda. Greville was once a wastrel but he never comes across as one once he is introduced to the Neville's and this does not diminish him or make him boring in the least. He is a fine hero.

Greville falls in love with Amanda but I am unsure as to why. He says she is a caring person but they spend so little time together that he must have heard about her kind nature because he would not have had many opportunities to view her with tenants and others (Greville does see Amanda's devotion to her brother and father). This couple spends much time apart, especially toward the end of the book and this slowed the pace of this story.

Finally I just never warmed up to Amanda. She was reserved and her personality subdued. Amanda in a word is compliant, keeping the norms society and her parents expect of her without giving reign to her own desires. (Her mantra is "this is what mother would have wanted.") She has tempered emotions except when she first meets the hero and then she is full throttle unwelcoming. She was a rather lukewarm character, I did not hate her but I was not engrossed with her either and whenever she shared a scene with her dynamo of a cousin she stood in her shadow. I hope Miss Justiss writes a novel about cousin Althea, she deserves her own story and because she is so very exciting her story will likely be too.

An unusual and realistic hero - delightful story ! 6 Feb 2011
By Texas Annie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm dumbfounded by the reviewer who was bored by this book. IGNORE THAT REVIEW! I can be easily bored by silly "perfect" heroes - this hero is NOT one of those. I urge anyone wanting to get a good taste of this book before buying it to read the Chapter 1 excerpt on Julia Justiss' webpage. Our hero was illegally kidnapped and forced to serve upon a wartime naval ship, and as the story opens he has finally managed to get back to England, although he's in severe pain and will remain so for the rest of his life due to a leg injury. His forced servitude has caused him to examine his life and realize what a waste he'd made of his life so far, so he's had an epiphany and is finally ready to take on adult responsibilities. He makes for an intriguing hero - not perfect, flawed as all humans are, but trying, although not always successfully, to re-shape his attitudes, despite the continual pain that threatens to drag him down. The heroine is equally interesting, and they feel right together. Another GREAT book by Julia Justiss.

a most worthy gentleman who is a charming, gentle man 26 Jun 2011
By Virginia Campbell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Society's Most Disreputable Gentleman" is a most charismatic gentleman indeed! Julia Justiss has created a charming character study of Greville Anders, the only son of a nobleman's younger son. Without a title, and a clear ambition, Greville lives a life of seemingly carefree debauchery. After serving a minor role in the battle of Waterloo, Greville returns home and is made the manager of one of his titled cousin's minor estates. Willingly turning over the management duties to one of his associates, Greville resumes his life of partaking in pleasurable pursuits. When he discovers that the man has been embezzling from the estate, Greville confronts him only to be knocked unconscious, kidnapped, and pressed into serving on a man-of-war. After being seriously injured in battle, Greville is returned to England and given lodging for his recovery at the estate of Lord Bronning. The Lord's beautiful daughter, Amanda, is not impressed by her first sight of Greville in his tattered and stained traveling clothes. However, seeing him after he has rested and obtained more suitable attire, Amanda realizes that is quite a handsome gentleman. He is also a gentle man, with a sly wit and a disarming sensuality. Amanda, who has put off her Season more than once due to family concerns, is just about to depart for London. She has never met a man like Greville, and he sets her mind awhirl and places her thoughts for her future in disarray. She was born to be the wife of a titled man of wealth, and Greville has neither of those things. Their attraction to each other continues to grow, and for the first time in his life, Greville finds himself in love. Amanda is equally smitten, and she is torn between her duty as a Lord's daughter and the desires of her heart. Circumstances dictate that she indeed finally will have her Season, and Greville remains at her father's estate while Amanda journeys to London. Due to the poor health of Amanda's father, Greville steps in to help manage the estate and discovers that not only is he capable of the task, he finds it to be quite pleasant and rewarding. On the other hand, while Amanda finds much to enjoy in London, she ultimately decides to return to her home without accepting a marriage proposal. There is only one man who holds the key to her heart, and that is her "disreputable gentleman". You will enjoy the personal growth of these two characters as they learn much about themselves while they struggle to find their place in the world. They bring out the best in each other, and you will root for them to have their "happily ever after".
