Product Description

Product Description

Now in its third edition, this market-leading textbook continues to provide students with an excellent explanation and demonstration of the main approaches and techniques in social research methods. The book shows students how to assess the contexts within which different research methods may be used, and how they should be implemented. It covers both quantitative and qualitative research and examines the significance of this very distinction. It also covers mixed methods research, a topic on which the author is an authority. In an accessible and student-friendly manner, the book shows students how to go about doing their own research projects and how to write up their research. In addition to presenting a wide range of features within the text, including up-to-date empirical research examples, the third edition supports students and lecturers with a full set of online resources. Online Resource Centre For lecturers resources include PowerPoint slides, notes to accompany the slides, case studies with questions, and a test bank to enable lecturers to create their own unique online testing sessions. For students the resources include instant feedback multiple choice questions, web links, an online research guide, interactive Excel tutorials, and access to the real-life student experiences used in the book.

Outstanding - I've used this book extensively for my undergraduate BA (Hons) in youth and communuity education.

There is also plenty of scope in the text for providing readers working on MA programmes with more than sufficient detail to support thier thesis.

The book is well laid out, offering an overview of the key themes and then providing detailed information in the latter sections of the book.

The links, in the book, to the web site were dissapointing though - this is the only reason for the 4 stars.

This book is a comprehensive text book for anyone studying health and social research methods. It is quite expensive, but has everything you need to know, so could be the one book you buy.The contents information is detailed and there are colour coded headings on the pages to let you know what area you are looking at. The author has long and wide experience in higher education and research methods; he uses examples from students who have recently completed their studies, to give helpful ideas about what works well. There is a link to the publishers website, specific to this book, with additional website links;also on this website are links to podcasts from recent students, so if you like learning by listening this is again very helpful.

Exceptionally lucid, thorough and readable
Couldn't have found a more welcome book for making sense of potentially dry and even turgid subject. Very helpful indeed, and now a companion as I set off on research of my own.
