Product Description

Review

'I will never use another textbook for my social psychology courses!’ Dr Martin Hagger, University of Nottingham

‘Hogg & Vaughan is the most comprehensive social psychology text on the market and covers material in a more sophisticated manner than the competition. Moreover, the chapters on culture, self/identity, and language provide information that is often lacking.’ Dr Mark Burgess, Oxford Brookes University

‘I use the fourth edition of Hogg & Vaughan for my first-year class and can say that it makes teaching social psychology interesting and fun! The writing style is clear and engaging and conveys the passion of the authors even with difficult and potentially “dry” material.’ Dr Anja Eller, University of St Andrews

A man enters a café, greets with a kiss on each cheek a young woman waiting for him at a table, and sits opposite her. He orders them both an espresso and subsequently dominates the conversation about a recently released film. How would a social psychologist go about explaining this rather ordinary event?

Reflecting the links between social psychology and our everyday lives, the fifth edition of this market-leading textbook provides a lively and accessible introduction to the field.

 Classic features:

·        Addresses key issues in social psychology from a European perspective

·        Includes a range of features to aid independent study such as theory and concept boxes, research highlights and real world applications

·        Packed with exciting research studies ranging from Allport to Zimbardo.

New to this edition:

·        Chapters on attitudes, aggression, leadership and decision making, prosocial behaviour, and attraction and close relationships have been significantly rewritten to include the latest thinking and developments

·        Literature, Film & TV sections have been updated to include the most recent examples of social psychology in the popular media

·        Increased coverage of topical areas including terror management theory and social neuroscience

Also available - new, user-freindly website featuring an interative recap and reminder of the main text, self test materials, and podcasts from different researchers for students to consolidate and test their understanding. For access visit www.pearsoned.co.uk/hogg.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, clear and full of information 26 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Currently using this book for a third year Psychology course in the UK and find it very clear, and covers a wide variety of topics. It definitely is worthy of praise. Well-layed out, and each topic is supplemented by informative diagrams, info boxes, etc. A must for studying social Psychology.

It took until the third year of my psychology course to appreciate the true value of this wonderful textbook. For those with a love of Social Psych - this is the text for you. The film and book suggestions at the end of each chapter are great ways of exploring various themes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book 3 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
I'm a post-grad masters degree student at the moment. I found this book a very pleasant read compared to most of the other boring clinical and dull psychology texts Ive read over the last 5 years. I especially like the use of colour through the book making it aesthetically pleasing to the eye. All areas are well covered and I especially impressed with how the authors are able to relate their subject to the real world and also to recommend films where the reader can view what has been explained in action. This would be very useful for visual learners. The section at the back of each chapter recommending further reading on areas which might be of interest is also a nice touch. The book is also scattered with useful and relevant pictures and diagrams. I also like how the author sometimes poses questions in between the text getting the readers gray matter working and making the reader thing about what they are reading while reading rather than just skimming by. Clearly they are rather passionate about their subject matter. Over all an excellent text if you are interested in learning about Social Psychology. (If your an undergrad looking for a quick fix to copy out of for an assignment then go for a more boring book)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 4 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Excellent well written book with plenty of topics, exercises along with answers covering all subjects of Social psychology and some of what is talked can be lifted off and apply to IT users and how they behave when using a system - so it not only extremely useful to GCSE; A Level and Degree Psychology students but from experts outside the spectrum.

5.0 out of 5 stars social psychology book review 5 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Fully comprehensive book that covers pretty much everything in social psychology. It is also interesting because appart from presenting social psychology in itself, it gives some insight into the historical evolution of social psychology as well as its current situation (e.g. important journals, differences in research between the US and european countries, etc.).
