Product Description

Product Description

This first European edition of Social Psychology builds on the factually rigorous and intellectually provocative work of the original US book to offer a comprehensive discussion of one of the most captivating, dynamic and popular areas of psychology.

Thoroughly revised and updated to include the most up to date research from Europe, North America as well as more International research, this book serves to help us answer many fundamental and intriguing questions about our selves and those who surround us, including:
  • How does thinking – both conscious and unconscious – drive our behaviour?
  • What leads people sometimes to hurt and sometimes to help one another?
  • What fosters group unity, cohesion and mutual influence?

This book will help you study this exciting discipline and help you find answers to these and other questions. This text has been written for the student, to be accessible and interesting, helping them to expand their understanding and motivate them to enquire and analyze as they study.

Key Features Include:

  • Examples of European and international research drawn from both classic and contemporary studies
  • The Inside Story: these first person essays provide students with insights into what motivated various social psychologists to study certain questions and phenomena
  • Focus On: This feature gives students an in-depth exploration of a topic presented in the text
  • Research Close-Up: This feature offers in-depth looks at scientific explorations of fascinating questions. They provide students with a detailed understanding of how social psychologists use various research methods to explore puzzling questions and reveal important insights

A range of other key features are also being retained for this edition, including margin definitions, chapter outlines and summing up sections.

This book is a fantastic new addition to social psychology teaching resources. It has clearly been targeted at expanding students' knowledge in a thorough and intelligent fashion, whilst also capturing each individual student's attention and imagination using thought-provoking features like the 'Research in Focus' and 'Inside Story' sections. The book provides comprehensive coverage of key areas of social psychology including all the essential classic studies, but also more recent theories and areas of interest such as the growing literature on social identity and health. The additional chapter on applied social psychology allows the student to understand how the theories developed within the discipline can be applied to the world around them, and this is also complimented by the clever 'Focus On' sections added to provide a more in depth exploration of each topic. My students enjoyed using the book as an aid to their learning and exam revision, and as a lecturer I found the online resources particularly valuable too.
