Product Description

Product Description
The third edition of this well established textbook remains a key book for students of social policy and other sociology related disciplines. Updates to this edition cover Labour's administration (1997 to date), taking into account the commitments made by Labour in their 2005 general election campaign. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field, to provide comprehensive coverage of a wide variety of social policy and welfare issues. All the existing chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and updated to take into account recent changes in British and European social policy. For this edition one new chapter has been added - Globalization and Social Policy. The chapters are written in a non-technical way and are supported by detailed case studies, suggestions for further reading, end-of-chapter questions and a glossary. In addition, the supporting online resource centre provides further material including weblinks, answers to the end-of-chapter questions, and updates.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easily understandable reference book, 21 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Social Policy (Paperback)
This book is very simple in its layout and expainations. It has each subject wriiten by a specific specialist. The way it is sectioned out allows the reader to pin-point a specific piece of information, without having to dredge through a hundred other pages first. What makes this text book original, is that, although aimed at degree students, it has rather an 'A' level feel to it. Each author backs up their arguments with case studies and also acknowledges other points of view. This method is crucial, as it allows the reader to broaden their knowledge. One becomes exposed to other theories and opinions, other than those they were originally seeking. This book is a definate must if it is required for a Social Policy degree, as it encompasses how policies are made and how the system and society view and react to them. It can be used effectively throughout each year, and can become as impotant to you as your pen and paper.

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult, 17 May 2005
This review is from: Social Policy (Hardcover)
This book was difficult to follow and it didn't split the areas down into relevant areas of subject matter - it confused me and consequently I could never prepare properly for social policy lectures. Some if the information was helpful but the layout was confusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Resource, 23 Nov 2008
I have enjoyed this text and found it an excellent resource on my Social Work course. It is clear and concise, and easy to dip in and out of, and excellent for assignments. Highly recommended if you need a one size fits all text book for your Social Policy module. Good value for money for the amount of info you get. Having looked through several before I purchased, I found this one to be the most reader friendly and indepth.
