Frankl applies the techniques of psychoanalysis to recent archaeological findings in order to trace the psychological development of humanity. His method aims to enable us to gain a new understanding of how the mind originated, how our earliest ancestors became toolmakers, and how cultures developed. We are shown the conflict between matriarchy and patriarchy, and above all, the nature of patriarchal paranoia, that fatal disease which was and continues to be the source of warfare. These are some of the important issues to which Frankl addresses himself, and his conclusions may transform some of our fundamental concepts about our social existence and about ourselves.

About the Author
George Frankl was born in Vienna, where he studied philosophy and psychoanalysis. The Nazi invasion of Austria forced him to emigrate and, as soon as he could, he continued his studies, first in England and then in Canada. Towards the end of the war he came back to England and eventually settled in London where he has been in psychoanalytic practice for some 35 years. He has lectured on psychoanalysis and philosophy, as well as on prehistoric cultures and architectural psychology, and has written a number of articles and books, amongst them The End of War or the End of Mankind, The Failure of the Sexual Revolution and The Unknown Self. But while actively engaged in writing, lecturing and his work as a psychotherapist, he has been concerned with the social neurosis and determined to find an explanation for the compulsions which drive nations to pursue irrational and all too frequently self-destructive goals. He is now convinced that the most important achievement of psychoanalysis will emerge in its applications to the social pathologies.
