A very comprehensive book, one of the most comprehensive on the subject, but not an introduction into social behaviour as it assumes pre-exsisting knowledge in the field. For post grads and specialist animal behaviour students/ teachers only. It is full of useful information but also some controversial theories. the profiles from leading experts are the most readable sections, written with passion and inspiration. The themes section is the most useful read, the foundations section being heavily theoretical and the most difficult section to read and some chapters not being relevant if you dont buy into evolutionary game theory and using economics to predict behaviour. I personally think behaviour is too complex and there are too many variables to boil down into predictable equations. Although these assumptions are statistically convienent such a simple model may not reflect the complex suite of processes that may be operating to shape evolution, not to mention the independant actions of the individual. Overall if you are looking to further your knowledge on social behaviour this is a useful book, but take some chapters with a pinch of salt.
