Book Description

Statistics suggest that between 7-13% of the population suffer with some kind of social anxiety that inhibits and affects their lives negatively.

Having ‘been there myself’, my late teens and twenties were a struggle of trying to fit into society whilst feeling like an outsider.

Unable to do many things that most people take for granted, such as making phone calls, going to the supermarket, finding or even looking for a job, all felt painful and extremely anxiety provoking.

I didn't really know why I was feeling this way. I blamed it on many outside factors such as upbringing or being bullied at school. I later realised that none of that matters. What’s important is how we move forward in life. The past is in the past.

I've written this guide to help people who are suffering with this issue, and for the family members. So that you can realise that you are not alone in this and you are so much more than you think you are right now.

Even if you are feeling at your worst as you read this, I am hopeful that you begin to realise that social anxiety doesn't define who you are as a person. There's a whole new way of experiencing life that’s just around the corner. A life that you never thought was possible.

Reading Steve's book expanded my knowledge on the topic of the 3 principles.

This was not the first time I had heard of the 3 principles by Syd Banks, but I gained some extra clarity as well as a personal example of how Steve and others applied this advice to their lives. His tone and writing style flow quite nicely and make for clear understanding. Most importantly for me however, is that this advice is coming from someone who has gone through a similar path in terms of dealing with social anxiety for a big part of their life. It is my belief that only someone who has gone through something like this can truly understand what people with SA actually go through.

The principles themselves seem to have very close ties to Eastern philosophical teachings such as you are not your thoughts and you are not your story.

Now, my only concern here is that taking our thoughts for granted and "buying into" our stories about ourselves is something most people have been doing for most of their conscious lives. It's a conditioned mental habit which will not release or let go of that easily (at least in my own experience). Perhaps a stilling practice such as meditation/mindfulness could be recommended in order to "see" through one's thoughts but maybe some people don't need to sit still to see through. It's all personal preference at the end of the day.

However this is simple nitpicking. A very recommended read for anyone who has suffered with social anxiety or continues to struggle. This is perhaps the flash of the proverbial Zen insight which may set you free.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully simple 14 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brave inspiring and very honest, Steve's book is an invitation to look at SAD, the pain and the limitations associated with it in a completely new and insightful way.
Beyond it's simplicity there is a profound message of hope and emotional well being. Stay with the simplicity and receive the message the book carries with a quiet mind and an open heart. Insights and understanding will arise within you and in your own time and in your own way you will find yourself having an easier and happier experience of life.
There is nothing to do and nothing to apply, no technique. No effort, only a waking up to your innate health, your potential and your beauty.
This book is a gift to all of us, whether we suffer with social anxiety or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very practical and thoughtful book. 8 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Steve Light has out together a great read on a topic I knew very little about. It helped me tremendously understand the issues that people might be going through and it helped me realise that the diagnosis of someone with social anxiety disorder is very much an arbitrary judgment.

It seems very much more likely that there is a spectrum of feelings that are experienced by people in social situations. None of us is entirely immune of anxiety when faced with new social situations, and nether are many of us so affected that we pass out with fear.

Most of us are somewhere in-between and as Steve clearly indicates - our awareness of our thinking is a much more interesting phenomenon than the thinking itself, which tends to be largely automatic, in response to our previous experiences.

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in exploring this topic, either to help themselves, or to help them understand the behaviour of those around them.

5.0 out of 5 stars It only works one way 13 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Life does only work from the inside out. I love the way how Steve went through his journey of discovery, and how he has come across the understanding that we all have inside of us. Once we can see how the outside world is not what gives us our feelings, that we live in an innocent misunderstanding, we can start our journey of discovery from pointing inside, to the formless energy of thought, where our feelings come from. Nothing or no one can make us feel anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you 29 Oct. 2013

As long as I can remember I have always struggled with social anxiety. I am now in my thirties and things have not got any better.
After reading this (I have read it over ten times in the last day!) it has given me a start to a different way of thinking. This has given me an insight into how things could change.

A really useful starting point which I am now going to look into further. Thank you Steve
