If you are affected by social anxiety, or social phobia (either directly or know someone who is) then you would do well to look at Le Blanc's authoritative reference.
Here you will find a clear understanding of the disorder and its stigma, along with practical guidance on how to manage it. From help in getting a proper diagnosis through to living with the condition or with someone who has it.
The book's brevity is key - packing so much into something which can be easily digested in a single sitting or two. This means that all information remains fresh at the end, and clear chapter markers enable easy dipping in and out for future reference.
Case studies here prove very helpful, and the author even includes details of support groups, forums and further recommended reading.
It's difficult to imagine such a sharp yet complete introduction to SAD, but here it is. As another reviewer has said, you can search the internet for a long time. I would save yourself a lot of keystrokes and instead pick this up.
Highly recommended.

As we sprint through our lives in one thundering great rush, it is not surprising that we pick up various damaging and overwhelming personality disorders along the way. Self-help books for anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety disorders and phobias are springing up all over the place, but let me tell you, having read my fair share, you won't find a better Author than this for this category. He has the gift of imparting comprehensive explanations of various behaviors, and suggesting methods to find a solution, in a clear and understandable way. He recognises the devastating effects of social anxiety disorder as it cripples the sufferer and prevents them from reaching their true potential in life. He describes the physiological changes that occur when we experience fear (healthy) and irrational phobias (decidedly not healthy) which are just as potent in either situation. The extensive research he has obviously undertaken even includes the history of the condition, how it was perceived then, and how it has been acknowledged now. He also pinpoints signs to look out for when identifying who would be most at risk of having the condition, and details at length the various treatments available. I realise I now sound quite knowledgeable in my appraisal of social anxiety disorder, but trust me, it is only because I have studied the chapters of this book carefully, and hope to apply his advice into my life. In summary I would say that if you identify (even mildly) with any part of the symptoms described, then I know you certainly don't want these invisible handcuffs on your life, but you definitely need this book as your key to unlock them and be free!

At 30, I've always considered myself extremely shy and introverted...until I read this book. I've never heard of social anxiety disorder. On a whim, I downloaded the book for Kindle and started reading through it. The book couldn't have described me in a better manner. I took notes and went to my doctor. There's more to my shy and introverted-ness than what I thought.

Good overview, good information. If you have a tendancy to avoid crowds, hate talking on the phone, go to the grocery store at 7 am to avoid people, and avoid busy restaurants due to not wanting to eat in front of others, you may want to get this book.

Thanks for making it free briefly. If that wasn't the case, well, I'd probably still just be shy and introverted.

Stop searching the Web for explanations and cures for SAD. The author Raymond Leblanc provides clear descriptions on the range of unpleasant changes occured in the body by irrational fear.

This book is very complete. You'll find the anwsers to all your questions on this subject: What the history is of SAD. What the symptoms are and how they are developed. Who is at risk. And, of course the solutions: how to cure and overcome it through different therapies. And very important, how to support a person suffering from SAD.

I can only recommend this guide.

This is a must have book if you cheat yourself out of experiencing life and all the wonderful things it holds through social anxiety.

It is well written and easy to understand, and will help you to move past those things that would hold you back and prevent you from enjoying life. Once you understand the signs that leads to self sabotage, you can keep your mind going in a positive direction. This is an encouraging read that will help you put everything into perspective. This book was a great self-help tool that helped me to find a natural solution to my anxiety that worked.

This book was recently recommended to me by my therapist. Having had an anxiety disorder since I was a child, my therapist thought understanding my condition would help me in treating it better. This past year, I developed agoraphobia. I finished this book in a little less than two weeks and so far, have noticed a significant improvement. This book was well written and thoroughly explained the mental and physical process of anxiety. As anyone with anxiety knows, the most simple thing can trigger an attack and it takes quite a while to come back down from it. This book went on to to give tips on how to avoid anxiety inducing situations as well as ways to deal with unexpected anxiety. I am not 100% cured but I am definitely doing a lot better than I was a few weeks ago. If you suffer from an anxiety disorder, I highly recommend this book.

It's surprising to learn that millions of Americans suffer from social anxiety disorders and phobias, but this book will help one understand all about the disease and learn to cope with it, and curb it. The author's extremely helpful advice is easy to follow, and his many hints, tips and strategies can applied to normal day to day activities. He gently explains the history of it so we can decipher exactly why and how people become affected. It's enlightening and educational, and a terrific self-help book to pick up for a friend or yourself. An added bonus is medications and types of therapy which can be an option to alleviate the symptoms of SAD also. A wonderfully written book that will act an a significant tool towards you making that first leap to overcoming your obstacles.
