4.0 out of 5 stars A little gem 6 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
I love it when things like this happen.
Buying an album on a hunch can be a dodgy dabble with fate - but when it works it is great. I must have heard something about the Holloways from somewhere but nothing prepared me for the musical freshness, energy and melody that I found.

They have followed a few bands of late in their approach to this album, it doesn't sit still with one genre - making it very hard to pigeon hole. This is a both a positive and negative quality depending on what side of the fence you sit. It can show great diversity and talent and keep an album fresh and the listener on their toes. It can also been seen as a bit of a marketing ploy; try to capture the maximum breath of the market to capture the most sales. When it is the latter, the music is not coherent and the album quickly loses it's point if it had any to start with. I am happy to say that I think The Holloways just have a varied set of influences and the album sits together very well indeed. - Although saying that, I would like to suggest one of the major influences must be the Wonder Stuff - sounding very similar in many ways.

The Holloways start with 'So this is Great Britain' that is a short punky rock song, sounding very much like the Only Ones with the delivery and Libertines with the arrangement. 'Generator' is a ska influenced track which is a catchy guitar driven melody with repeated lyrics. The album moves at a fast pace and is similar to the Kooks debut album of 2006 in may ways. The lyrical content and even some of the tracks sound like the type of material the Kooks should be producing for their second album.

'Most Lonely Face' is one of my hi-lights, a slow ballad-esq rock song similar to that the Arctic Monkeys have also produced on their albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars hum along 26 Aug 2007

similar to the pigeon detectives, this album and it's extremely catchy single generator, are diamonds . true music to bop along to. the boys have made a real catch of this one , without a doubt one to get this year from a band tipped for future greatness

5.0 out of 5 stars Poppy, catchy 29 Dec 2012

Good stuff from a band Pandora constantly bombarded me with. Slightly akin to Vampire Weekend, but just jangly, catchy Brit-pop, with a dash of punk.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff... 29 Aug 2012

The Holloways are what a lot of more popular Brit bands would sound like if they were only better. The only knock I have on this band is that the harmonies - which I generally like - are a bit overused and there are places where one vocal would probably serve the purpose. Still, good tunes pretty much all the way through the album.

The Holloways have such an interestingly diverse sound it's hard not to love them. Kind of folksy rock with a twinge of alternative. The price was great and the CD shipped very fast. I was impressed with both the seller and the artist.

Pure Brit pop punk! A bit retro, but fresh. Great hooks from this fun group! Sensitive and irreverent lyrics.
