Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Enjoyable on many levels ... OK, it's enjoyable on only one level--if you're a big fan of Mike Myers's screwball idea of funny. That this script had been through a lot of hands in Hollywood before Myers agreed to star in it (using his Wayne's World clout) seems amazing as most of the truly funny bits here seem to be straight from Myers. Most memorable is his role as his own irascible Scottish father, screaming at his youngest son and talking about the Bay City Rollers. But Myers also plays Charlie, a bookshop owner/poet who falls in love with a "hardhearted harbinger of haggis", the local butcher (Nancy Travis), who may also be a serial killer. Mostly enjoyable, but there's also some weird stuff here. Try as you might, you may never rid yourself of the image of Brenda Fricker and Anthony LaPaglia making out. Also features a great soundtrack with Soul Asylum and Toad the Wet Sprocket. --Keith Simanton

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming Romantic Comedy, 24 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Mike Myers is a San Franciscan poet who falls in love with a sexy butcher called Harriet (Nancy Travis). But when he suspects she is in fact infamous Mrs X - a serial killer who has killed three former husbands in a bloody trail across America - he decides to think again. But by then, it is too late...

This film is a real gem - a gentle romantic comedy flavoured with Myers' unique brand of quirky comedy. The performances by the whole cast are perfect (Myers playing a double role very successfully), and the many comedic details are painstakingly brought to life. The preposterous plot is gleefully played out to its obvious conclusion at a desolate honeymoon hotel, complete with various parodies of Hitchcock and 'The Shining'.

The film's got an excellent soundtrack too, and the winning performances of Myers and Travis bring to mind the similar awkward pairings of 'Fever Pitch' or 'Notting Hill'. Charming stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars A slice of life, 6 May 2007
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self made poet, has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.

He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?

If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?
