Review

'An evocative and moving account of Cook's beginnings' Daily Express 'Her candid disclosures reveal a side of the man the fans never saw.' Sunday Express 'Peter was a wit, it goes without saying, but he was funny in an almost supernatural way that has never been matched by anyone I've met or even heard about.' Stephen Fry 'If there is a heaven he will be the funniest man there.' Clive Anderson 'Possibly the funniest man in the Western world. From his early 20s, nobody could hold a candle to him.' Daily Mail

Product Description

The most intimate portrait of Peter Cook to date, Cook's first wife writes of her life with Britain's most ingenious and innovative comedian, and offering a side of him few have ever seen. To his many fans, Peter Cook was quite simply the funniest man they never met. Over a decade since his untimely death, his reputation as one of Britain's greatest comics shows no sign of shrinking. Wendy Cook was a teenage art student when she first met the handsome Cambridge undergraduate in the early Sixties. They married soon after and together founded the Establishment clubs in London and New York, and financed the satirical magazine Private Eye. Wendy bore Peter his only children and they lived together during the most explosive time in Peter's amazing career. But the price of this stratospheric rise was high. 'I felt eventually I had to go my own way rather than stay with somebody who was that nihilistic. Alcohol stokes up the demons and a completely different person starts to emerge. He did know how to behave well, but it rotted into something else. At a certain point I thought, "This will be the end of me if I don't leave now."' Finally Wendy took her daughters to Majorca to live on a farm and the couple eventually divorced a few years later in 1971. Putting aside 30 years of discretion about her life with the comedian, Wendy decided to break her long silence to set down her memories. Comprised of personal anecdote, musings of intimate friends, from Alan Bennett to Jonathan Miller to Paul McCartney, and exclusive photography.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Biography of WENDY Cook actually, 7 Feb 2007
By N. J. Myerscough (Liverpool) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the blurb in the synopsis says, Peter Cook is the funniest man most people have never met - I'm one of them. I saw this book and thought it would be an excellent insight into the man, and his humour, his friendships and the 'unseen' Peter Cook.
Sadly, the author of this book, as Peter's ex-wife, has written an account more about her life than his. In fact I'd describe it as self-serving, purile, putrid drivel with hardly a gem of Peter's amazing wit and style to be seen.

An early chapter (dealing with HER early years!) describes the countryside she enjoyed - "This constant theatre, this ever-changing colour, smell and texture, provided me with a sense of order that I was to call on again in adult life. And behind the visible world of fragile spider webs, the lichens that crumbled rocks, the ants that bored away trees with their formic acid, reducing old tree trunks to a powder - behind all this was the teeming world of the suprahuman: the twitching grasses of shape changing beings. who could not be enthralled?"

Well, me for starters!

The book then goes on and spends considerable time talking about Wendy's 'amazing' cooking, and Wendy's 'brilliant' fashion sense, and not least Wendy's 'excellent' home design. An awful lot of this book is dedicated to Wendy's life but it's supposed to be Peter's biography. Wendy Cook is a shameless name-dropper and egotist - the number of quotes included in this book from both Peter and Wendy's friends - yet addressed to her and talking about her - is phenomenal.

I want to read about Peter Cook, have a laugh, and see some of the other side of his life. Sadly, for Wendy and readers of this book - Peter and Wendy seemed to be apart for most of the time - so we only realy see Wendy's life.

To sum up, having read this book, I'd have probably divorced her as well. Sorry Wendy - please re-title this book "So Hello then: I was married to Peter Cook", or "Wendy Cook by Wendy Cook"

1.0 out of 5 stars Self indulgent & dull, 19 Jul 2007
By cookie (London) - See all my reviews
I have to agree with the other reviewer. People buying this book are going to be interested in finding out about Peter Cook. This book is mostly about Wendy Cook. Self indulgent rubbish. Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars how to make peter cook seem dull, 2 Oct 2007
By D. Bedwood "db5" (london) - See all my reviews

i didnt think it was possible but this book did just that, mainly (like other reviewers have pointed out) by the author just talking about herself. If i wanted to find out about Wendy cooks life i would of bought a book on her, i didnt, but unfortunately i still ended up buying a book on her!

utter rubbish.
