Sadly Missing Many of Her Best Songs,
This review is from: So Far... The Best Of (Audio CD)
With a voice that came thundering through like lightning, and highly emotional lyrics, Sinéad O'Connor single-handedly pioneered rock music for women. A huge star in the early '90s with her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," (which remains one of the best selling singles of all time). Seven years in to her career, this retrospective came along and gathered some of best finely-crafted pop songs you will ever hear. Sinéad O'Connor is so much more than her number one hit single, she is an artist who delivers on time, and in time. So Far.. The Best Of, however, fails to give a fair overview of her career up until that point; many of her essential singles are missing, such as the lovely "Special Child" and her tribute number to Cole Porter from 1990, "You Do Something to Me" and a couple of key tracks from her own catalogue "Three Babies," "Famine," "I Want Your (Hands on Me), but most noticeably the stunning "This Is to Mother You" from her 1997 EP Gospel Oak. Not all is lost though, the collection does contain many of her best and most successful songs; from the painful heartache of "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance" to the fierce "Fire on Babylon" to the high-strung drama of "Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home." When it all comes down to it, Sinéad O'Connor is the source of inspiration for many; to get to O'Connor, you'll have to get through Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette, Courtney Love, Liz Phair, Dolores O'Riordan, Dido, Sarah McLachlan and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, this collection fails to give a concise representation of her artistic brand of music and acute vision on how true and heartfelt music should be made.

Conservative selection,

This review is from: So Far... The Best Of (Audio CD)
This useful round-up of the most commercially successful period in the career of Sinéad O'Connor of course kicks off with the memorably wonderful Nothing Compares 2 U and concentrates mainly on the hit singles, but in their album versions. Owners of the albums that these selections come from will find little that they don't already have, the only exceptions being a shorter Thank You For Hearing Me (at 4.34 presumably a vinyl single edit) and Empire, a Bomb The Bass track on which she guests with Benjamin Zephaniah.
Key album tracks such as the vengeful Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, I Am Stretched On Your Grave and Fire On Babylon are also included, though had the collection been a little more adventurous it would have been nice to see some of the hard to find experimental early singles such as I Want Your (Hands On Me) with MC Lyte, or the notorious Jump In The River duet with Karen Finley. As it is, this collection mostly serves the more casual listener who does not expect to soon buy any of her albums. N.B. The Amazon review and description refers to the American edition which has a rather different tracklisting

This is one brilliant compilation including all the tracks that highlight Sinead O' Connor's life and soul. The music is beautifully orchastrated and the lyrics are heartly and powerful with Sinead's angelic voice taking your breath away... The compilation sticks out as a must have for your mood music collection and will be playable for years to come. So few can compare!
