Many of you may not have experienced the pure vocal talents of Miss Dina Carroll yet. If not then let me recommend this excellent album to you. Dina Carroll has a rich, warm voice which has a hint of spice too. Equally at home with a gentle ballad or a more upbeat disco track I am sure that you'll find this album a joy to listen too from the first hearing. It is also the sort of album that you won't tire of but will remain a firm favourite.
I find its great to listen to in the car, as background music when people are round or turned up loud in the foreground - just take it as you feel.
The first track 'Special Kind of Love' is a great start and shows the power of Dina's voice, but my favourite is 'This Time' (track 3) with its great start - just turn it up and it's the sort of stuff that gets the hairs on the back of neck tingling. The title track So Close (track 5) is another firm favourite, indeed its difficult to pick one that isn't. But wait until track 10 'Don't Be a Stranger' with its powerful instrumental start building to the purity of the first vocals, and the gentle yet strong harmonies - and great lyrics to boot.
So treat yourself - experience the rich tone, the power, but sensitivity of Dina Carroll - you'll keep coming back for more !

Yes this is one of the best and most delightful albums I have heard. Dina Carroll is one of the best British Female Solo Artists around! I would give every song on the album 5 Star! This is the kind of album you can just sit down to and relax and enjoy the beautiful singing of Dina Carroll!

dina is one of my favourite singers. i thought it appropriate to leave a review at this time as dina is back recording and playing live again. i was a bit surprised to see there weren't more reviews for this album. i would recommend this or the best of cd (try and get the 2cd edition with remixes) if you have fallen for her voice and aren't sure which album to buy.

this cd opens with the clivilles and cole penned special kind of love which does exactly what it says on the tin. it is a wonderful classic pop song and starts the album off in a joyous mood. the next song is a bit more of a soul/jazz/pop affair about keeping your inner strength. this time is one of my favourites , a wonderful ballad. my favourite song on the album is you'll never know, which i think is a personal song to dina, speaking of her relationship with her father ( i think so, i could be wrong there) it also has an ambiguity to it making it a song relating to any relationship between two people where one has not been there for the other in some way.

a special mention also must got to heaven sent which is a gorgeous gospel soul song and was worked on with cissy houston who arranged the backing vocals and also features the new hope baptist choir.

Not a lot of people are familiar with Dina Carroll, in actual fact they really don't know what there missing. She has a strong, unique elastic type of voice which can easily range from fun upbeat songs, to power ballads, to mid tempo numbers, this woman really knows how to put emotion into a song, for instance `Hold On', when i feel weak and i'm not on top of the world, i play this song because the message is to simply `hold on', it support's this message through the clear and powerful lyrics, i also absolutely loved the use of the saxophone in it, same with other songs like `You'll never know', the saxophone solo in that is mind blowing, and certainly not what you expect from an early 90's pop record. When i bought the CD, i never thought in a billion years it would turn out to be as truly excellent, classy, or as emotional as it was, but don't worry it's not all down-tempo songs, there some really good upbeat numbers too, such as her biggest hit 'Ain't no man' which still gets a little bit of radio play, there is also the fun yet slightly sexual 'Express', and the dance floor filler, 'Special kind of love', the moderately happy 'Falling', and just for good measure some mid-tempo songs also make an appearance on the album, such as 'Why did i let you go', the gospel inspired 'Heaven sent', and finally 'If i knew you then', which is more of a chillout song, with a light bit of emotion sprinkled onto it. Overall i would definitely recommend this album to anyone who has a passion for pop music, yet also needs a degree of emotion at the same time.

cd arrived promptly & in very good condition. Dina was around in the early 90,s at the same time that Mariah carey first came out & I always thought that she was underated compared to Mariah. Not keen on all of the songs but love "so close" "special kind of love" & "aint no man".Her voice sounds amazing.
