Finally a step in the right direction for Alanis Morissette,
By Louis Smith (Southampton, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: So Called Chaos (Audio CD)
I loved Jagged Little Pill. Even though I was only eight when my mum brought it, I never found it challenging and I loved the catchy songs. My family and I used to sing along to in the car on journeys, I bet my friends used to think I was really weird! I immediately went out and brought the subsequent Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, however I didn't really like the darker more lesbianic idea she was promoting at the time. I was only 9 or 10.. After SFIJ I didn't really follow her direction, but I brought 'Unplugged' and I was thrilled, but it was more of the same JLP and a few new tracks, which were ok and far as an eleven year old can tell. In retrospect I didn't expect anything less from JLP due to the legendry producer Glen Ballard at his peak. I hesitated when buying 'Under Rug Swept' but I loved the single that she released. I always secretly wanted her to get to #1 in the UK charts and I scanned the radio to try and find her playing on a local station but the closest she got to #1 was with 'Ironic' in 1995.'So Called Chaos' is the much-delayed successor to JLP in the sense that Ms. Morissette has progressed in a direction that I prefer. Her upbeat melodies juxtapositioned with her insightful lyrics exposing her incredible vernacular and broad range emotion make for a brilliant and innovative combination, last seen in JLP. With incredibly uplifting tracks like 'Eight Easy Steps' which could even appear in the next 'Legally Blonde' movie, show a more positive aspect to her music, the single 'Everything' which has been more popular on MTV than any other Alanis Morissette since the 'naked' video, 'Doth I Protest Too Much', 'Out Is Through', 'Excuses', 'Knees of My Bees' and 'This Grudge' shine out of the album which are a return to a happier place. If you're looking for a return to Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, it's not here. If you're looking for a fantastic follow up to 1995's successful Jagged Little Pill you've found it. It's been a while, but after 9 years, it's easy to tell her music has progressed to a place where she's wiser, happier and more aware than she's ever been in delivering an incredible album like this.

STOP comparing this ot JLP,
By A Customer
This review is from: So Called Chaos (Audio CD)
This is a truly great album in my eyes. How do I know? I like every song on the album. So many times I buy an album and have likes and dislikes, always skipping through the tracks to get to the 'best' ones. With 'Chaos' that isn't so. I listen to it from start to finish which reminds me of only one other album I have ever bought... you guessed it: 'Jagged Little Pill'.Almost every review compares this album to JLP. Why do people do this? Saying JLP is better than SCC is like saying red is better than green or France is better than Russia. You simply cannot compare two things which are so different. JLP was set in a different time and a different place. If it came out now it may be the biggest flop ever or an even bigger success - who knows??? Just listen to the album right the way through about 4 times then tell me you don't like it - you won't!

So-Called Chaos.....more mainstream.......but still good!,
By A Customer
This review is from: So Called Chaos (Audio CD)
I'd say this is Alanis's most mainstream album to date. That's not to say it's not good. It's just that there are no attention grabbing songs like "You Oughta Know" (Jagged Little Pill). The album has a poppy feel to it and the songs are upbeat. So I'd warn buyers who are looking for another Jagged Little Pill, however, I'd definately recommed you still buy this album! As with all Alanis's albums the lyrics are still on top form. Stand out tracks being Doth I Protest Too Much, This Grudge, So-Called Chaos, Not All Me and Everything. This album is a grower, as with most of Alanis's work. When I first got it I wasn't too sure about it, I felt it was too poppy for me. But as I've listened to it more, Ive found ive not stopped playing it! This album is better than her previous one Under Rug Swept and on a par with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and Feast On Scraps. If you liked Feast on Scraps then the tone of the music is similar to that. Still not as good as Jagged Little Pill but then I don't think that will ever be bested. Although not Alanis's best album its still a great buy and better than most albums out there!!
