Debussy was instrumental in the development of twentieth century music. His innovative approach to tonality had a huge effect on what was to come, influencing musicians from Stravinsky and Gershwin to John Cage, Herbie Hancock, Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

It's fair to say, then, that Debussy would probably have been intrigued by Isao Tomita's electronic performances of his works. Tomita focuses on the tonal and playful aspects of Debussy's compositions, remaining faithful to their spirit while giving them a wholly original treatment.

Music journalists often like to say that if a certain composer was alive today he or she would work with synthesisers, turntables, samplers or whatever. This is a cliched shortcut for saying "they were ahead of their time". In Debussy's case, however, there's probably some truth to it, and this album gives you some sense of what he might have produced if he had access to the music technology of the 1970s.

What price nostalgia. Bought this album hot off the press all those years ago, I wanted it to take me back and it did that better than expected. Younger people reading this review perhaps won' t appreciate it' s significance in this genre. In this era synthesizers were monophonic, so you could only play one note on the keyboard, so all individual pieces had to be put on to multi track tapes. Love this, Amazon please continue to acquire music like this. Personal request, Tomita Daphis & Chloe, currently unobtainable at realistic price.

I had been looking to replace my vinyl version for a while and minutes later I had it, here at home ready to use. What did we do before the internet? Oh, I remember - join the traffic and people, burn the fuel, pay for the parking, walk round in the cold and then be told "we can order it for you, it should be in at the end of the week." Bah! Humbug! I say.
