From Amazon.co.uk

Definitely not your average retelling of the classic Snow White fairy tale, Snow White and the Huntsman is a dark, action-fantasy film that's based more on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale than the well-known Disney version of the story. It features intriguing concepts, impressive special effects, and some disappointingly lackluster acting.

The essence of the "Snow White" story is preserved in this recounting: the queen's beautiful daughter Snow White, who is heir to the throne, is displaced and persecuted by an evil stepmother after her mother dies. Here, the evil stepmother Ravenna possesses a disturbing power to maintain her own perpetual youth by stealing youthfulness from the hearts of the young and beautiful, but her magic mirror warns that Snow White's innocence and purity as she comes of age will destroy Ravenna's chance at immortality. When Snow White escapes from the castle prison, Ravenna hires a downtrodden Huntsman to bring her back so that Ravenna can steal her youth and achieve personal immortality. But Snow White runs into a dark and sinister forest where mushrooms disperse hallucinogenic spores, trees come to life, flocks of bats spring from inanimate objects, and dwarves lurk in the shadows. The roles of the seven dwarves and the Huntsman in this version of the story prove to be quite different from the original, but what remain steadfast are Snow White's inner strength and absolute goodness, and her stepmother's innate evilness.

This film is full of fascinating imagery that's brought to life through powerful special effects, great costuming, and captivating cinematography--the scenes in the dark forest and the fairy-filled wilderness beyond are reason enough to see it. Unfortunately, the story moves a bit slowly and the acting by Kristen Stewart (Snow White) and Chris Hemsworth (Huntsman) is rather stoical and passionless and lacks chemistry, though Charlize Theron does stand out as a particularly disturbing Ravenna. --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her.  But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) who was dispatched to kill her.  Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

Snow White and the Huntsman is a film that is resigned to a three star rating because it is an opportunity missed. The story of a princess destined to defeat an evil queen is nothing revolutionary or unique but this film doesn't even attempt to make that tried and tested formula original. Instead the story is very straightforward and as such the film suffers somewhat because of this. There seems to be no life in the plot or the screenplay for that matter, which at times can feel stilted and cliched. This film could have been far more epic and engaging if so much time hadn't been spent on plodding through landscapes which, however stunning they may be, doesn't make for a gripping film.
However, this film does have many good things going for it, perhaps most impressive being the talented Rupert Sanders who directs with a keen eye for action and the more subtle scenes. His skills are also evident in the beauty of this film, there are some visually stunning set pieces in particular the evil Queen's soldiers made from shards of black rock, a strange Tim Burton esuque dark forest and a meeting with what looks like the forest god from Princess Mononoke. Yet this stream of visually brilliant set pieces could also be considered as the films downfall as at times it feels like Sanders is simply including snipits from all his favourite fantasy films. There is a defenite Lord of the Rings type ambition in his direction but it never even begins to reach the epic scope of Jackson's masterpiece and neither does its story resemble anything tolkein's plots, though it doesn't fail in trying to. Though the special effects are flawless, never overused.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't expecting much... 13 Oct 2012

But the movie is great. The effects - both visual and special - were amazing. Plain and simple. The scenery is fantastic and very well incorporated into the movie. Theron makes a convincing Queen, worthy of our fear. Hemsworth makes a believable drunken huntsman, lost in his own grief and Stewart delivers one of the best portrayals of one of the most recognisable fairytale characters. I was - along with a lot of other people, I'm sure - surprised and almost "shocked" at the uncharacteristic casting choices but after viewing the finished product I understood and agreed.
Some people write these reviews based solely on trying to tarnish the acting of an actor or actress. It's both rude and tacky.
The truth is, the movie is good. It's not Oscar worthy but I don't think I've ever read anything about it being in the running for a statuette. It's not as ground breaking as some apparently thought it would be, but it is fun and entertaining and I will gladly place it into my collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new take on an old favourite. 6 Jan 2013

First of all, don't expect this film to be like Disney's production in anyway at whole. It is not sugary, it is dark and deep.

Charlize Theron as the wicked Queen gives an excellent performance although she does go a bit over the top at the start of the film. Kristen Stewart plays Snow White and does it admirably.

The film owes more to the tales of the Grimm Brothers in its darkness and evil. The land itself is slowly being poisoned by Ravenna the Queen. Her magic mirror is brilliant piece of CGI, the image inside it, flows out like a river of molten gold to reveal the spirit within it. Having been told by the spirit of the mirror that she is no longer 'the fairest of them all' she has Snow White brought before her with the intention of killing her. She manages to escape but the Queen hires a Hunstman to find her and bring her back.

Meanwhile, Snow White is stuck in a forest of nightmares.......(the special effects here are stunning). She is soon pursued by the Queens brother but once again manages to escape.

She meets up with the dwarves who are nothing like the Disney characters. These are battle hardened warriors. Eventually the Hunstsman believes who she is and promises to help her. So, with the aid of the dwarves and the Huntsman she sets out of avenge her Father and take her rightful place as Queen. However, before this, she takes a bite of the inevitably poisoned apple and to all intents and purposes is dead. The person who kisses her and breaks the spell is not a Prince............

Both my husband and I enjoyed this film tremendoulsy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark not Disney 5 Nov 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Throw out your ideas of disney. Come to this with a blank mind.
Brilliant special effects. Kirsten is excellent in the part. This was a role not
Intended for someone who pouts beautifully on camera. It's dirty and gritty
As the character was intended to be someone who had spent about 8 years
In solitary confinement - you would no expect the character to be bubbly and
Gushing. I would say throw away the story book, and see this with fresh eyes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch it and decide for yourself! 2 Oct 2012

A lot of people have been negative about this film. I admit it could have been better but I still can't help but like it!
Yes Kristen Stewart is more of a pretty face than an actress BUT I feel that she was showing more emotion than she does in twilight which is an improvement. Theron is AMAZING! Her character is terrifying and quite frankly she makes this movie! Hemsworth is good, but he seems to be a bit, i don't know...lacking something? Not sure whats up with him as he's usually awesome!

Overall I'd say don't go on everyone's reviews, just watch it and make your mind up yourself! I'd definitely watch it again and in the future will be adding it to my collection!
