The trilogy binds Nain Griffiths (superbly played by Sian Phillips in the TV adaptation in the early 90's) and the children of the Griffiths, Lloyd and Llewelyn families over 4 years. The first story starts on Gwyn Griffiths' 9th birthday, 5 years after his 9 year old sister Bethan mysteriously vanished in the night when she left the house to find a lamb lost on the farm owned by the family. Gwyn's Grandmother, Nain, gives him 5 presents which will reveal Gwyn's destiny as a magician in the mold of the ancient wizards of welsh folklore. The first gift, a silver brooch, is taken by the wind and returns as Arianwen, the 'Snow Spider', who provides Gwyn's link with another world and the key to his powers.
Jenny Nimmo's words are spellbinding, drawing in the reader to the trials and tribulations of the children. There is love, jealousy, fear and magic woven into the tales leaving you wanting more, although you are left more than satisfied with this.
