Product Description

Ever since her mother was found dead in the snow when she was eight, Gerda hated winter and kept herself safely hidden away from it as well as the rest of the world. It isn't until the new bellboy at her father's inn, Kai, takes notice of her that she begins to live again. However, just as the pair fall in love, Kai suddenly becomes cold and hateful. As he tries to fight his new nature, a mysterious woman dressed all in white comes to the inn and takes Kai away. Only Gerda believes he is still alive. With all of her faith, love, and courage, she will journey through each season until it leads her to Kai and The Snow Queen.

STUNNING! 18 Mar 2004
Format:DVD
This film is a beautiful adaptation of Hans Christian Andersan's classic fairytale 'The Snow Queen'. Everything from the acting to the script, the plot to the scenery and effects is wonderful. This film achieves in taking the viewer into another world. All the magic of the fairytale is retained, and a sense of reality also maintained.
The story is funny, sad, happy, moving, full of emotion from beginning to end. Although it is quite long, the time goes quickly when watching, as the magic captivates the old and young alike.
This is a must have in the collection of anyone with imagination. A classic film that will be remembered and treausured throughout a lifetime.

The Snow Queen: 23 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have loved the Snow Queen films as a child, and when this Birdget Fonda release came out on TV, I couldn't wait too see it.
It's a really good film, quite clever (like when Snow Queen melts a bit near a fire). It's also very spooky and creepy, and guaranteed to give a a small chill. It's very enjoyable, lovers of the cartoon will absolutely adore this GREAT FILM!

Having seen the adverts for Snow Queen on Channel 4 near Christmas last year i was naturally excited about it as this was the first time i'd ever seen a non animated film of one of my all time favourite stories, but when it finally came on TV ... i missed it. So, upset about this, i went hunting for a DVD of the film and could only find it in America (not sure why it hasn't been released here) and for a very reasonable price so i ordered if off Amazon.

This is a wonderful rendition of the Hans Christian Anderson classic starring Bridgit Fonda as the evil Snow Queen. The Story, which differs somewhat from the original, is about a young girl named Gerta who, having lost her mother years before in a vicious winter storm, has taken to retreating away from everthing and everyone when winter is nigh. It is only when she meets and falls in love with the new bellboy at her father's hotel, Kai, does Gerta come out of her shell and begin to appreciate life again. But one cold winters night a guest at the hotel, completly covered in fur and diamonds, disapears taking Kai with her and leaves Gerta heartbroken once more. Refusing to accept this Gerta sets out on a quest to reclaim her stolen love travelling through the four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter in search she who has been named the "Snow Queen". Facing many dangers along the way Gerta must face off against the Snow Queen and free Kai from her spell before he completes the task for which she took him, to re-build a mirror, created by the devil himself, to make it forever winter. Throw in a talking, ice-skating polar bear and you've got a very entertaining movie.

The scenery, as you'd expect from a Hallmark epic, is truly breathtaking and the film has quite a nice soundtrack.

The DVD does not have much in the way of extras except a "Behind the Scenes" look with interviews with the cast and crew (excluding Bridgit) and a trailer for other Hallmark productions but, since the film is so good, having it on DVD is enough in itself.

I would recommend this to fans of the book or those are not as familiar with the story as this is a truly remarkable film that deserves the recognition, but some of the more adult themes in the film may not be appreciated by the younger audience (and there a few scary moments).

Hope you enjoy it as much as i did.
Happy viewing.

Slow and drawn out
I really disliked this adaption. I watched it over Christmas with my children and we all totally lost interest. It was so long and slow. I gave up with it in the end.

Longwinded
This was a very long winded story line, very boring with bad acting. A shame that Bridget Fonda has her name to it. To me it was a load of rubbish and not worth the money.

An antidote to the 5 star reviews
The acting is wooden; the direction, such as it is, is flat. There is no drama, no tension. For one hundred and ninety minutes the plot grinds along in a series of vignettes. Read more
