3.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant when it works, 25 Feb 2005
This review is from: Snooper S4 Neo GPS Speed Trap Detector (Electronics)
I've had a Snooper S4 for 3 weeks now.

The unit was simple to install (comes options for windscreen mounting with a suction-type bracket or dashboard mounting with velcro pads; and can be hard wired into the vehicle's electrics or simply plugged into the cigarette lighter socket).

The software is easy to use although sending the downloaded locations file to the unit can take 20 minutes over the standard (and only) serial connection - if your PC has no serial port then you will nedd to purchase an additional USB to serial converter.

The first time I used it I was impressed. I went for a drive to some local GATSO cameras and was alerted to their presence and the speed limit 400 metres before reaching them. However since then I have found some flaws in the ability of the unit to alert to camera locations. The A37 south of Bristol into mid Somerset has 3 fixed GATSO cameras. Travelling north the Snooper alerts for all of these irrespective of which side of the road they are on, but head south and it fails to identify any of them. A similar thing happens with schools - it alerts in one direction but not the other. The unit isn't faulty either as the locations can be manually added and then the unit locates them all of the time, so it seems that the downloaded locations are incorrect.

In short this is a nice looking unit that is smaller and easier to mount than its competitors, but don't rely on it to be fool proof. The manufacturer really needs to do some work on the location database!

4.0 out of 5 stars snooper s4 neo, 21 Feb 2007

After reading about camera detectors i opted for the s4 neo without knowing what i really needed. The unit plugged into cigarette lighter socket in car and worked, identifying cameras and high risk areas where mobile cameras may be sighted. To update the camera database the unit has to be connected through serial port on pc, to the internet with the updater software. Each unit has a unique serial number, this is activated over internet via a subscription of £4.95/month 1st 6 months free with new product. Units reported stolen to performance products cannot be updated, and they cannot be updated by frieds account etc. After reading book i found you can use the inbuilt logic software to silence warnings for cameras on oposite carriageways, and stay silent if your speed is under the limit for that road, or set to warn of all cameras. There are other settings for city driving or motorway and can preset the distance before the camera 100m to 400meters. The S4 can detect laser although the addition of an add on unit called S100 RLD which mounts behind the radiator grill, gives better detection of radar and laser.
The unit is easy enough to use and set up, updating can take some setting up through serial port as i sometimes have to try connecting to the unit twice. On starting the car and setting off the unit searches for 3 satelites to find its location, this can sometimes take up to 5 minutes, but normally around 60 to 90 seconds. This may be due to areas that have tall buildings or background interference. Satelite units like these or tomtom etc will not work propperly in some french cars that have the heat reflective windscreens as they have a metallic coating across the surface of the windscreen, some units like tomtom can use a plug in sat reciever to get round this problem.
There is a newer version of the S4 neo which picks up more satalites called the S4 evo R.
For a simple unit which is good at warning of fixed cameras, then for the price it is not a bad choice. If you want top spec with sat navigation the buy the Tomtom Go 510,710 0r 910 as the subscription for the camera database on these units is £30 for the year. I will use my S4 Neo for another year, (minimum period for subsciption is 1 year). Then when the falling prices for the tomtom and other sat nav units come down to my pocket size i hope to upgrade.
