More About the Author

Hello all and welcome to my author page!

I'm Jennifer M Smedley, I'm in my early 30s, from Liverpool, England, and I set up PlantaPress back in the winter of 2010 to publish my debut children's novel Snofjell. I began writing Snofjell on 22nd July 2002 when I was 23 years old. I wrote around 12 chapters and it languished unfinished until February 2009 when I set up a Facebook page for it at a friend's suggestion.
I put synopsis up on Facebook, along with the first seven chapters up for people to read, and the reception was so positive that by 2010 I realised I had to publish it. So, PlantaPress was born and Snofjell was finally put out there!

The novel is a magical fairytale set in the Norwegian Arctic Circle, and is rather educational in that it has a great deal of Norwegian and Sami culture within it. Although it was originally aimed at the 8-13 age group, adults have bought it for themselves and it is currently in the Teenage/YA section at Waterstones. It falls into the 'Magical Realism' genre, and given the adult interest in it, I guess we could call it 'crossover fiction' !

Both PlantaPress and Snofjell have received a very positive, and supportive, reception from the publishing industry, as a whole, and our titles are now available from all the big stores including Waterstones and Blackwells. The reading public (including Norwegian!) seem to be enjoying Snofjell, and we are now beginning to catch the eye of education professionals too.

Since Snofjell was published, I have taken on my first outside title, which is a lovely under 5s picture book called 'The Lazy Seagull' by Johnny Parker and Andrea Foy, illustrated by Winston Tsang. It was released at Easter 2012 and is on track to becoming quite a bestseller!
As 2012 progresses, I have a few more authors in the pipeline to take on, and I will be publishing my own second novel 'Crusade For Bramble Wood!' in the autumn.

The first draft of Bramble Wood is written, and me and Jenn Llewellyn (illustrator) will start preparing that for publication soon.

The idea for the prequel to Snofjell began to develop in my head in early January 2012 too, so I will begin the first draft of that as soon as I can!
We also have an in-house magazine, called (rather imaginatvely...) PlantaPress Magazine. It comes out three times annually - Christmas, Easter and Summer - and contains author/illustrator interviews, excerpts from titles, information about new titles, and a submissions corner for all you budding writers out there. It also has some general interest articles on personal development, the paranormal, and celeb interviews! The current issue is available to read online at the PlantaPress website, or you can request a hard copy direct from me - just email me and I will send you one.

To find out more, please visit our website, or find our titles on Facebook. You can also email us with any direct questions at

Happy reading!
Best wishes,

Jennifer M Smedley
Director of PlantaPress

A lovely fantasy story that captures your attention from the first page; the use of Norwegian language and culture helps to take the reader to the far off lands of rural Norway. It was well written with lovable characters that you come to care about and simply cannot put the book down as you turn from page to page of this enchanting story.

Great dreamy book, not just for children! 5 May 2011

I have to say that I am hard to please when it comes to the fantasy genre. I find it very difficult to forget about rationality and the reality which surrounds us. My favorite novel for both adults and children is "Le Petit Prince". Snofjell is very different from Le Petit Prince but Jen Smedley has written a great inspirational book indeed. I was very impressed with the research she obviously undertook in order to write about Norway circa 1925.
I found myself slowly but surely getting into the magical universe that she describes. When she writes, she is able to convey very real feelings and you can really relate to how the characters feel and even more importantly, why they do feel that way. This is just a fantastic book, it opens up your imagination and takes you into the unreal!
I got very attached to the main character, the narrator, Harriet. Her style is so refreshing yet highly evocative and you get more and more into that beautiful story....
I highly recommend it and cannot wait for the sequel to come out. Bravo Jen!!!!!!
