If you want to own Sniper on DVD, make sure you buy the version sold by Amazon.com, or in other words, the American (Region 1) version. The Region 2 version has poor picture quality, a 4:3 ratio (the American version is 1:85) and is cut to shreds.

Avoid.

I HAVE OWNED SNIPER ON VIDEO FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS. I WILL NOT GO INTO THE PLOT, ETC. AS THE OTHER REVIEWS HEREABOUTS WILL TELL YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
I HAVE JUST PURCHASED THE FILM ON DVD AND TO MY HORROR HAVE FOUND MANY CHANGES (FOR THE WORSE) TO THE FILM WHEN COMPARED THE THE VERSION RELEASED ON VIDEO. AS WELL AS THE "KILL" SEQUENCES BEING SPEEDED UP, ie THE SLOW MOTION VIEW OF THE BULLET IN FLIGHT BEING REMOVED, THE MOST GLARING DIFFERENCE IS THE SCENE IN WHICH BECKETT TAKES OUT THE RIVAL SNIPER BY SHOOTING HIM THROUGH HIS TELESCOPIC SIGHT, AFTER SETTING MILLER UP AS BAIT.AS THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCENES IN THE FILM,IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN TOTALLY REMOVED, TO BE REPLACED WITH A POOR EFFORT WHERE BECKETT STRANGLES THE RIVAL SNIPER IN FRONT OF MILLER WHO IS SLEEPING ! VERY STRANGE INDEED. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE DVD VERSION HAS BEEN ALTERED IN THIS WAY, ESPECIALLY AS IT WORSENS THE FILM. MY ADVICE IS : IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN SNIPER, BUY THE VIDEO VERSION - IT IS FAR SUPERIOR.

Nice movie! 4 Dec 2001

Sniper gives a true new meaning to war movies. I remember movies about Vietnam or WWII, lots of firing, everybody dies, bam bam. "Sniper" takes war to a new level or refinement. The movie certainly conveys all of the emotions it aims for - The helplessness of humans in the jungle, the hatred and eventual trust between Beckett and Miller, and the rush of the moment when they pull the trigger. A seemingly low-budget film makes up for every flaw with action, suspense, and thrill, because when it comes down to it, it's just one shot, one kill.

Great Film
Great Film, you can feel the tension at certain moments in the film.
Even if you are not into war films this is worth a look.

Not the whole film
As with other people, I was duped into purchasing this DVD thinking it was the film that I knew and loved. Unfortunately I was mistaken. Read more

Highly disappointing. This is the edited version which is missing most...
Sniper isn't exactly top-drawer to start with. Strictly a B-movie by Anaconda director Luis Llosa, it still had a lot of charm, as jaded but experienced sniper 'Beckett' (played by... Read more

Sniper
This was the first movie in the series, and in my opinion, the best. Tom Beringer is cast superbly as the battle-weary gunnery sergeant. Well worth watching again and again..

NOT CUT - BUT ALTERED
THE SNIPER is a great film - probably one of the best war movies ever made (I consider it a war movie, although it might not be your typical action packed war movie such as... Read more

Poor
Sometimes one (this one anyway) feels like some lightweight viewing. This is so lightweight that your television may have to be weighted down to stop it floating away. Read more
