From Amazon.co.uk

Tom Berenger and Billy Zane head the cast in this silly action film about a tough Marine and an Olympics marksman who team up in the Panamanian jungle to take out a rebel leader and the drug kingpin financing him. Berenger's done this switched-off soul bit before, but Zane doesn't seem quite ready for his part. In any case, the acting doesn't matter as much to director Luis Llosa as fancy camerawork to give viewers the sense of a bullet hurling along its trajectory. --Tom Keogh

If you want to own Sniper on DVD, make sure you buy the version sold by Amazon.com, or in other words, the American (Region 1) version. The Region 2 version has poor picture quality, a 4:3 ratio (the American version is 1:85) and is cut to shreds.
Avoid.

I HAVE OWNED SNIPER ON VIDEO FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS. I WILL NOT GO INTO THE PLOT, ETC. AS THE OTHER REVIEWS HEREABOUTS WILL TELL YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
I HAVE JUST PURCHASED THE FILM ON DVD AND TO MY HORROR HAVE FOUND MANY CHANGES (FOR THE WORSE) TO THE FILM WHEN COMPARED THE THE VERSION RELEASED ON VIDEO. AS WELL AS THE "KILL" SEQUENCES BEING SPEEDED UP, ie THE SLOW MOTION VIEW OF THE BULLET IN FLIGHT BEING REMOVED, THE MOST GLARING DIFFERENCE IS THE SCENE IN WHICH BECKETT TAKES OUT THE RIVAL SNIPER BY SHOOTING HIM THROUGH HIS TELESCOPIC SIGHT, AFTER SETTING MILLER UP AS BAIT.AS THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCENES IN THE FILM,IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN TOTALLY REMOVED, TO BE REPLACED WITH A POOR EFFORT WHERE BECKETT STRANGLES THE RIVAL SNIPER IN FRONT OF MILLER WHO IS SLEEPING ! VERY STRANGE INDEED. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE DVD VERSION HAS BEEN ALTERED IN THIS WAY, ESPECIALLY AS IT WORSENS THE FILM. MY ADVICE IS : IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN SNIPER, BUY THE VIDEO VERSION - IT IS FAR SUPERIOR.

Sniper gives a true new meaning to war movies. I remember movies about Vietnam or WWII, lots of firing, everybody dies, bam bam. "Sniper" takes war to a new level or refinement. The movie certainly conveys all of the emotions it aims for - The helplessness of humans in the jungle, the hatred and eventual trust between Beckett and Miller, and the rush of the moment when they pull the trigger. A seemingly low-budget film makes up for every flaw with action, suspense, and thrill, because when it comes down to it, it's just one shot, one kill.

THE SNIPER is a great film - probably one of the best war movies ever made (I consider it a war movie, although it might not be your typical action packed war movie such as WINDTALKERS or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, this is quite different).
THE SNIPER IS A 5 STAR FILM, without a doubt. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because the UK version has been altered and is not the same as the international or R-Rated version.
As another reviewer correctly stated, the to me coolest and most innovative kill scene in this film (Tom Berenger killing an enemy sniper by shooting in his eyes through the telescope of his rifle)was completely replaced with a different kill. Also the ending is different. This doesn't make the UK version useless (3 stars instead of 5), as there are several scenes here not seen in the R Rated print, but the pacing is different (worse) and the scene mentioned above do take away some points that made this film so great.
I recommend the US Region 1 print. Can't play Region 1? Check out the Dutch release.

This film is ace, a real insite into the life of a USMC sniper. You may think this would be fairly boring as a snipers life is mainly stalking etc. but this is completely different. The two snipers are plagued by south american drug lords and mercenaries, and although the realism is somewhat streched in parts it is a great film. Brilliant!

I saw this film just 3 days ago and I am still in no doubt this is the one of the finest films to ever grace the planet. Billy Zane is a student sharpshooter, Tom Berenger is an experienced sniper, himself and Billy Zane get together after Tom's observer is shot by a rebel sniper, he vows to take revenge, and does so gracefully, all in all this is the finest of the fine, the Manchester United of the film industry, a must watch to say the very least, even when Tom Berenger has all his fingers broken with a piece of string.

Two professional sharp shooters, master Tom Berenger and student Billy Zane, are on search and destroy mission. A journey by walk in the hostile jungles of South America, far away from any map. The movie has a good storyline, although not as epic as Platoon or Apocalypse Now. Sometimes the movie looks like a cheap B-Movie, but the DVD itself is poorest. Only 3:4 Format, poor picture quality, only 2.0 sourround sound. No Options, no Extras. At least the movie itself is uncut on this DVD! The German DVD has been cut by whole 10min due to some blood scenes.

Well what can I say, Hair Wood has summared this film very well........indeed. Even though Billy Zane ends up shooting someone with a pen, I would still highly rate this film, and i'l like to thank director Luis Llosa for such a fine film for young budding snipers out there.
