Synopsis

A wild and tangled crime adventure involving gangsters, Irish gypsies, and a dog that can't stop swallowing things, SNATCH is both hilarious and action-packed. Jewel thief Franky Four Fingers is in London en route to New York, where he will deliver an 86-karat diamond to his boss, Avi. A compulsive gambler, Franky is tempted into an illegal boxing scam, becoming the unwitting suspect in a robbery committed by bumbling pawnshop owners Vinny, Sol, and their oaf-of-a-driver, Tyrone. Meanwhile, novice boxing promoter Turkish, and his dim-witted partner, Tommy, move into the big time with twisted crime boss Brick Top, and Mickey, a mumbling, unhinged Irish gypsy boxer and his band of travelling gypsies. Thrown into the proceedings are killers Bullet Tooth Tony and Boris the Blade. A stylised work with a gritty urban soundtrack and a cast of intricately developed characters, SNATCH delivers superb and witty dialogue while depicting one of the more zany, complex diamond heists ever portrayed in film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dog snatched the diamond, 23 Feb 2009
By Brendan O. Clarke "brendoclarke" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Snatch is G.Rithcie's second movie from 2000. The plot concerns unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster (Boris the Blade), incompetent amateur robbers, and supposedly Jewish jewellers who are all fighting to track down a priceless stolen diamond. Phew.

Customs Man: Anything to declare?
Avi: "Yeah. Don't go to England".
Snatch is a brilliant and original film which featurs a terrific cast of many known and not so known actors all creating a character that you will remember and be able to quote by the time the movie ends. That makes repeated viewings all the more fun. Also featuring a stylish and very creative direction from Guy Ritchie.
Brick Top: Do you know what "nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an 'orrible gunt... me"

Snatch surpasses his feature debut 'Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels' in almost every way imaginable. Here the deliciously absurd tone and painfully funny dark humour is spread throughout the entire film, which is where 'Lock, Stock' was thrown off balance. It tried to combine humorous elements with scenes that were just plain old grim.

"What's happening with them sausages, Charlie?"
Sausage Charlie: "Five minutes, Turkish".
Turkish: "It was two minutes five minutes ago".

The story follows a wealth of characters who are either chasing an expensive diamond or placing bets on a fixed/illegal bare-knuckle boxing fight between gorgeous George and Brad 'the Pikey' Pitt. G.Ritchie brilliantly waeves every scene together perfectly, and every character connects with the rest at least once.
Bad Boy Lincoln: "A what-a-nite?"
Sol: "A moissanite is an artificial diamond, Lincoln. It's Mickey Mouse, mate. Spurious. Not genuine. And it's worth... muck-all"
