Book Description

Snapshots From The Boer War contains more than 90 previously unpublished photographs taken in South Africa during the Boer War by a British soldier (Lance Corporal Charles Powell) whilst serving as an infantry telegraphist. These snaps were taken by him on a box brownie camera and show many aspects of his time there including, tented encampments and camp life, bivouacking in the field, uniforms and kit, veldt clearance and blockhouses, transport in trucks pulled by traction engines, rest time, armoured trains, a train destroyed by Boer Commandoes and much more.

The author, Charles Powell’s great-grandson, has extensively researched his story and has produced a narrative to the photographs which had previously little written information with them in Charles’ photo album. The book is extensively illustrated with other relevant family snaps, photos of memorabilia and maps. It will be of significant interest to anyone with a passion for late Victorian / early Edwardian military, social, communications, transport, or photographic history.

Books documenting the average Tommy, such as memoirs, diaries etc are few and far between to do with the Second Boer War, a fascinating campaign, which brought about a lot of change for the British Army. This fantastic book contains many, many previously unseen photographs from the normal British Tommy, who happened to have a Kodak camera at the time, and documented his time in South Africa, at the time no doubt purely for the benefit and enjoyment of his family and friends back home, but I doubt he could have realised just how important they would be historically - now, thanks to the author of this book, giving people the chance to see the life of a British Tommy - in camp, running a barber's service, feeding a pet dog, and snapshots of other parts of the campaign - steam traction engines used for haulage before the introduction of internal combustion vehicles, an armoured train, and a train wreck having been attacked by the Boers - photos of Boer civilians and guerillas are also very interesting. The photos are of fantastic quality and of better quality than usually seen in publications. In my opinion the importance of the photographs in this book can not be underestimated and I hope they receive a wide audience

A piece of family history researched and passed on to posterity in a very thoughtful manner. The photographs show a forgotten side of this almost forgotten war.

This is obviously written by someone with a strong family feeling, a wide knowledge of military procedure, armament, and a deep interest in the history of warfare.
He has a pride in his Great-grandfather, and acknowledges the importance of the wide scope of valuable history depicted in his amazing (for their time and location) photographs.
